JASPER, Texas – The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to Sam Rayburn Reservoir March 6 for the second of five stops in the Cowboy Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

“The biggest challenge for the anglers at this tournament will be to find the right patch of grass,” said FLW Tour pro Sean Hoernke of The Woodlands, Texas, who has three top-10 finishes at Sam Rayburn in his FLW Outdoors career. “The reservoir is notorious for rotating hot spots, and the key will be finding the grassy area that is hot on Saturday.

“The fish will be prespawn and will probably be staging in the grassy areas around the ditches and drains, as they are getting ready to migrate back in to the lake.

“Lipless crankbaits will be the No. 1 bait used for this tournament; however, suspending jerkbaits could be a factor – something that is not normally seen on Rayburn but, due to cold conditions, could work.”

Due to recent rains in the area, the reservoir has risen about 2 feet since the American Fishing Series event that was held there three weeks ago. The grassy areas will be a lot easier to fish, and winning weights should be 20 to 25 pounds, according to FLW pro Cody Bird, who fished the February event.

Anglers will take off from Twin Dikes Park located at 4842 RR 255 West in Browndell, Texas, at 7 a.m. The weigh-in will be held at Twin Dikes Park as well, beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Sam Rayburn BFL tournament is being hosted by the Jasper-Sam Rayburn Chamber of Commerce.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering even bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
