DEL RIO, Texas – Day one brought record-setting numbers on Lake Amistad despite winds that blew as hard as 25 mph. Today, thunderstorms could disrupt the fishing as much as the wind did on day one.
Disrupt, however, is a relative term in a field of nearly 200 boats. Some claimed the wind hurt their fishing while others claimed it helped. A few fishermen said the wind hurt them, but they were more concerned about how it was affecting their competition, namely sight-fishermen.
This tournament was believed to be a postspawn event, but there were a few anglers yesterday who mentioned bed-fishing in passing – on a lake like this, not many competitors want to spell out their fish-catching methods this early in the game.
What Thursday’s weather will do to the fishing remains to be seen. At takeoff today, a very strong wind stifled competitors while ominously dark rain clouds began to move in over Lake Amistad. The rain that seems certain to fall had only barely begun to sprinkle as the boats left at 7:45 a.m. Central time.
Whether it rains, storms or not, one thing that is for certain is that the wind will again be a factor on Lake Amistad today. Like yesterday, winds anywhere from 20 to 30 mph are expected to blow. And like yesterday, that will likely help a few and hurt a few more.
Competitors will weigh in their catches today beginning at 3 p.m. at Lake Amistad Marina (East Diablo Launch Ramp), located off Highway 90 West in Del Rio.
