HENDERSON, Nev. – Mother Nature turned on the fans in the desert surrounding Lake Mead on Thursday, and she forgot to turn them off for Friday’s round of Stren Series Western Division competition.
Anglers were hoping that the front that blew in yesterday bringing 20- to 30-mph winds might develop into some tangible precipitation for Friday’s fishing, but that doesn’t appear likely to happen. Some clouds have moved into the area, but little rain is in the cards. However, the wind continues to howl.
That left more than a few anglers scratching their heads as they idled out onto a choppy Lake Mead Friday morning. The wind blew a lot of people off their fish Thursday and decreased catch rates, and it doesn’t appear it will lighten up much Friday.
“There was a lot of pain and suffering behind that one,” pro Clint Johanson said about the single keeper bass he managed to catch Thursday. However, since everybody’s catches were down, Johanson managed to stay in the cut in ninth place coming into the day.
So even though it’s getting late in the week, day three of a cumulative-weight tournament, look for anyone who can scratch out a five-bass limit Friday to move up significantly in the standings and make a push for the cut.
Day-three weigh-in festivities begin at 3 p.m. Pacific time at Callville Bay Marina on the north shore of Lake Mead.
Following Friday’s competition, the top 10 pros and 10 co-anglers will advance to Saturday’s final round based on cumulative three-day weight.
