BENTON, Ky. – Stren Series Midwest anglers were greeted with a perfect Kentucky Lake sunshine Thursday morning to kick off day two, inspiring hopes that what they wish for the most will come true – running water that will spur the deep-water bite.
Everybody, it seems, is perusing Kentucky-Barkley’s deep-water ledges to find fish, and while the fish are there, the bite is tough. Current, though, will spur the bite, but in order for water to be pulled, a hot, dry day is in order. Luckily for the 200-boat field hitting the lakes today, that is just what Mother Nature has in store.
“I expect the fishing to be a little better today,” said pro Art Berry, currently in 40th with 13-10. “They didn’t pull much water yesterday because we had a few sprinkles. If we have some clear, hot weather, they might move some water, which is key to getting those fish to move around the ledges.”
It’s a well-known fact that Kentucky-Barkley is chock full of bass, but the situation this week is that, while the numbers are high, the areas where they can be found are few.
“The fish are really, really grouped up,” Berry said. “There are lots of them in small areas.”
No matter what happens out there today, current- or weather-wise, Berry still expects the fishing to be top-notch.
“This is one of the finest lakes in the country,” Berry said. “When you have nearly 14 pounds and you’re all the way in 40th, that says something.”
Following today’s weigh-in, the field will be cut to the top 20 pros and 20 co-anglers, who will advance to Friday’s competition based on their heaviest two-day weight. Weigh-in festivities begin today at 2:30 p.m. at Moors Resort and Marina, located on Moors Road in Gilbertsville. For those who cannot attend the weigh-in, FLWOutdoors.com provides FLW Live, a real-time online application that is the next best thing to being there in person.
