SARASOTA, Fla. – Team Never E-Nuff, headed by Captain Michael Rinaldo of Englewood, Fla. caught a kingfish weighing 20 pounds, 13 ounces to win the Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Series Florida – West Coast Division event in Sarasota, Fla. and $21,000 cash.

The captain, along with teammates Lauren Rinaldo, also of Englewood, Chad Schroeder of Zephyrhills, Fla., Spencer Bass of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., and Kent Allen of Hudson, Fla., caught the winning king on a live blue runner fished on 20-pound line, 30-pound fluorocarbon leader, Number 5 wire and Number 4 treble hooks. The team fished over ledges in 45 feet of water approximately 63 miles south of Sarasota.

“I live down that way, so I know that area,” Mike Rinaldo said. “We hopped from ledge to ledge and kept going until we found a place that was holding some bait.”

The Never E-Nuff team slow trolled their baits and chummed heavily with frozen chum blocks and chopped baitfish. The captain said this strategy optimized the area’s natural kingfish attraction. “I think that chumming helps hold the bait in an area and that makes it a little more active,” he said.

Finishing a close second, Capt. Ed Langel of Fort Pierce, Fla. and Team One Flipper caught a kingfish weighing 20 pounds, 12 ounces. Team Julie Marie, led by Captain Randall Sanderbeck of Seminole, Fla. placed third with a 12-pound, 4-ounce kingfish. The tournament fleet fished in warm, sunny conditions with light winds and moderate seas.

FLW Kingfish Series qualifying tournaments are one-day events. The field competes Saturday, and the winning team is determined based on the heaviest kingfish. The next FLW Kingfish Series Florida – West Coast Division event will be held April 1 in Englewood.

The FLW Kingfish Series consists of five divisions – Florida East and West Coast, North Carolina, South Carolina/Georgia and Gulf Coast. Each division is comprised of three events with a $100,000 purse for each event. The top 100 teams – 20 from each division after three qualifying events – will qualify for the three-day, no-entry-fee $300,000 Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Series Championship to be held in Orange Beach, Ala., Oct. 26-28. The championship winner will take home as much as $75,000.
