GREEN BAY, Wis. – As the rain relentlessly poured, the field of 133 boats made final preparations for what promises to be an unpleasant day on Green Bay. While the weather certainly put a damper on anglers’ spirits, the majority of the field was unsure as to how it was going to affect the walleye fishing.
Count pro angler Ken Schoenecker of West Bend, Wis., as one of many who are perplexed about the day-two bite.
“The wind could actually help the bite because it darkens the water, making the fish less spooky,” he said. “However, if the wind picks up over 15 mph, the west shore will have giant waves. That’s where a lot of the boats were yesterday. We’ll be able to get to our spot, but I worry people will already be there.”
When asked if a cancellation was possible today, Schoenecker said, “There’s no risk of a blow day because the Fox River is always an option.”
Joseph Mans, who currently sits in second place on the pro side, offered a different opinion on how the wind will impact the fishing. “With this wind, I’m afraid it’s going to blow them off and kill my bite,” the Peshtigo, Wis., native said.
Schoenecker’s day-two partner, David Kerzee, said he feels the fishing will worsen slightly. “I think 35 pounds or so will be the biggest weight today,” said Kerzee. “I definitely don’t think it’s going to be any better than yesterday.”
The day-two weigh-in begins today, rain or shine, at 3 p.m. Central time, when the field returns to Metro Park Boat Launch located on Bay Beach Road in Green Bay.
