Quality kings in the 30- to 40-pound range are abundant near shore on the eastern Florida coast. But according to kingfish crackerjack Greg Samuel of Deland, Fla., the FLW Kingfish Tour event set for April 1-2 out of Fort Pierce will likely be won by the team that pops a real giant.

“The team that catches a 50-pounder will be the one that wins it,” Samuel said. “The fishing should be great, especially if the water is clean.”

Samuel predicts the tournament will be won slow-trolling blue runners, goggle eyes or ribbon fish around natural ledges and live bottoms in 30 to 60 feet of water within three miles of the beach front. Anglers may have to venture farther out if the water has some color to it.
