Guin wins Central standings

NATCHITOCHES, La. – As Yogi Berra once said, it was like deja vu all over again when Harry Barber of Madisonville, Ky., came in with the heaviest sack of bass for the second day in a row and won the Co-angler Division at the EverStart Series Central Division contest on the Red River. Like Friday, Barber and pro Sean Hoernke each led their respective divisions Saturday, but, this time, they got to fish from the same boat.

Barber, who landed the heaviest sack of the day in either division Friday, caught four bass weighing 8 pounds, 1 ounce to win the tournament in Saturday’s finals.

“I had great partners all week,” said Barber, who collected $5,000 for his first EverStart win. “I fished with Sean today, and it was hard to fish behind him because he’s such a good fisherman. I caught my last one about an hour (before weigh-in).”

Coming in second place for the co-anglers was Mark Guin of Crossett, Ark., with a five-bass weight of 7 pounds, 7 ounces. He collected $4,000. Guin also came from behind to win the Central Division co-angler standings title with 692 points.

“I just flipped, fished slow and covered a lot of water,” he said. “Later in the day, they just turned on in one sweet spot.”

Ed Watson of Derby, Kan., finished in third place with a five-bass weight of 6 pounds, 1 ounce and collected $3,500.

Mike Drain of Purcell, Okla., finished fourth with a four-bass weight of 4 pounds, 7 ounces and collected $2,500, and day-one co-angler leader Chris Darby of Mount Ida, Ark., finished fifth with a two-bass weight of 4-2. Darby won $2,000.

Rest of the best

Rounding out the top 10 co-anglers are Fred Martin of North Little Rock, Ark., (sixth, $1,900) with two bass weighing 4 pounds, 1 ounce; Janice Arnold of Gentry, Ark., (seventh, $1,800) with two bass weighing 4-0; Gerald Andrews of Benton, Ky. (eighth, $1,700) with one bass weighing 1-0; Bruce Dale of Jamestown, Ohio, (ninth, $1,600) with one bass weighing 1-0; and Lynn Jones of Hernando, Miss., (10th, $1,500) with no bass.

Coming up

The Central Division is done for the 2003 season. The next EverStart Series tournament is a Northern Division contest at the Detroit River in Trenton, Mich., June 23-26.
