EverStart Series Northern Division, June 4-7

Fishing guide Terry Sjoberg expects a fantastic tournament with some big weights when the EverStart Series makes its first-ever stop at beautiful Lake Vermilion in Tower, Minn.

He notes that Vermilion is home to an almost endless supply of structure with shoreline rubble, docks, points, grass, reeds and rock piles all holding fish at one time or another. Anglers can expect water temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s if northern Minnesota has a normal spring, with the north sides of both bays and main-lake basins holding the warmest water.

According to Sjoberg, the lake is made up of large, deep basin areas and small, shallow dark-water bays. Bass in the warmer bays may have already spawned, while bass in the deep, clear basin areas will likely still be in prespawn.

Spinner baits and crankbaits will be effective search baits along shorelines and over rocky structures, but Sjoberg believes plastics will win this tournament. Crawfish color patterns are always effective, but they are not the only option. White, chartreuse, fire tiger, shad and minnow imitators are also good choices.

Early June is a fantastic time for both large- and smallmouth-bass angling on the lake, but keep in mind that it is not uncommon for nighttime temperatures to drop to the low 40s in Minnesota during June, so dress appropriately.
