Five Little Rock Wal-Mart stores to host fishing programs for children Saturday

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Wal-Mart and FLW Outdoors announced Thursday that their successful Take a Kid Fishing program will get a boost May 24 when an enhanced version of the event is previewed at five select Little Rock Wal-Mart locations.

The Take a Kid Fishing program is designed to bring children and their parents a healthy way to have fun in the sun through teaching them the basics of fishing. The event provides a relaxed teaching setting for parents, no matter their skill level, to introduce the next generation of anglers to fishing. The Memorial Day weekend event will offer free, fun and educational activities and interactive games for the entire family.

A trout pond will provide an environment in which kids can practice some of the skills they will learn during the event, including lessons on tying knots. Families will also receive the benefit of outdoor education from state and corporate experts offering information about everything from conservation to proper use of sun-care products.

“Through Wal-Mart’s Take a Kid Fishing event, parents can introduce their children to an activity that the entire family can enjoy,” said Bill Kerr, vice president and divisional merchandise manager for sporting goods at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. “It’s a great way for families to spend time together, and it’s something that they can participate in for a lifetime.”

Fishing enthusiasts and beginners alike are bound to enjoy the opportunity to meet some of the world’s greatest anglers at the May 24 event. Select members of the Castrol, Kellogg’s, Land O’Lakes, 7 UP and Stanley pro angling teams – including Bobby Curtis, Sam Newby, Keith Williams, Jerry Williams, Mark Goines, Carl Svebek and Eric Holt – will be on site with their NASCAR-style boats to answer fishing-related questions, sign autographs and pose for pictures.

For the Take a Kid Fishing event in Arkansas, Wal-Mart and FLW Outdoors have partnered with numerous other sponsors, including Snickers, Pure Fishing (Berkley/Abu Garcia), Banana Boat, Frito-Lay, Fujifilm and Skippy. The program offers the opportunity to participate in an array of exciting, hands-on activities and to sample FLW Outdoors’ sponsor products, while supplies last, including Frito-Lay, Kellogg’s, Skippy, Snickers and 7 UP items.

“The Take a Kid Fishing event is a great way for us to introduce the next generation of anglers to a sport that holds no bias. Anyone – regardless of age, color or gender – can fish,” said Christine Creed, vice president of marketing and sales for FLW Outdoors. “We are thrilled that Wal-Mart is going to offer this great opportunity specifically in the Little Rock market, an area that will benefit from the event with a variety of different fishing opportunities offered.”
