Wal-Mart FLW Tour, May 14-17
Anglers leaving Kentucky Dam Marina at this $500,000 Wal-Mart FLW Tour event in Benton, Ky., are going to face a situation similar to that on Lake Lewisville – are the bass still spawning, or have they moved into their postspawn patterns? The answer, of course, to this question will be influenced most by weather conditions in the days and weeks prior to the event on this massive reservoir.
In May, the lake is a bass angler’s dream come true, and whether the bass are spawning or not, this is perfect timing for a tournament on Kentucky Lake.
Spawning bass can easily be located in the shallows around buck brush that lines much of the lake. Silver-blue jigs, watermelon or green pumpkin plastic worms and spinner baits are all great choices for boating quality-size spawning bass.
After the spawn, bass will begin their move to underwater ledges. If it appears the spawn is over, anglers will need to concentrate on these ledges in 10 to 12 feet of water. Deeper-water bait choices include crankbaits in fire tiger or brown crawdad colors, pumpkinseed or watermelon Carolina-rigged lizards, and big spinner baits.
