EverStart Series Eastern Division, Feb. 26-March 1

Scenic Lake Martin and Wind Creek State Park near Alexander City, Ala., are highlights of the Alabama Bass Trail.

With 39,100 fishable acres, Lake Martin is always a case study in bass tournament strategy. Some anglers bank on the dependability of Martin’s smaller spotted bass, while others gamble on the lake’s wilier, but weightier, largemouth bass.

Although anglers don’t expect many giant stringers at Martin, the lake is a consistent fishery. Limits weighing between 6 and 8 pounds are common. Tournament winning weights are usually in the 13 to 14 pound range with one or two “kicker” largemouths anchoring the catch.

The last time the EverStart Series visited Lake Martin, in February 2000, Trip Weldon of Wetumpka, Ala., won the event with a five-bass limit weighing 13 pounds, 14 ounces.
