Poindexter wins Wal-Mart BFL Music City Division tourney

CADIZ, Ky. – Jack Poindexter, 48, of Livingston, Tenn., topped 79 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League competitors Saturday on Lake Barkley with five bass weighing 17 pounds, 7 ounces. The catch earned him $2,689 and 200 points in the Boater Division.

Poindexter caught his limit on green pumpkin tubes in Devil’s Elbow. The catch topped second-place boater James Jacobus of Johnstown, Ohio, by 1 pound, 14 ounces. Jacobus finished the one-day tournament with a five-bass catch weighing 15 pounds, 9 ounces worth $1,345.

Billy Schroeder of Paducah, Ky. (five bass, 15 pounds, 8 ounces, $807); Larry Frasier of Sebree, Ky. (five bass, 14 pounds, 10 ounces, $645); and Frank Bell of Smyrna, Tenn., (five bass, 14 pounds, 5 ounces, $592) rounded out the top five boaters.

Schroeder also received a $500 bonus from Ranger Boats as the highest-finishing participant in the Ranger Cup incentive program.

Scott Brummett, 32, of Brentwood, Tenn., earned boater big bass honors and $395 with a 5-pound, 10-ounce bass that he caught on a green pumpkin tube. He finished in 23rd place thanks to the fish.

Ron Evans, 51, of Smyrna, Tenn., claimed first place and $1,248 in the 71-competitor Co-angler Division with three bass weighing 9 pounds, 4 ounces. He surpassed second-place co-angler Robert Holton of Murfreesboro, Tenn., by 8 ounces thanks to a green pumpkin jig that he was flipping in Eddy Creek. Holton finished with a three-bass catch weighing 8 pounds, 12 ounces worth $624.

Brad Golden of Sparta, Tenn. (two bass, 7 pounds, 11 ounces, $374); Tim Coates of Westmoreland, Tenn. (two bass, 6 pounds, 8 ounces, $300); and Paul Pojar of Murfreesboro, Tenn., (three bass, 6 pounds, 5 ounces, $275) rounded out the top five co-anglers.

Golden earned big bass honors and $177 in his division with a 5-pound, 8-ounce bass.

Overall, seven five-bass limits were caught during the tournament.

The Wal-Mart BFL will visit Kentucky Lake June 29 for the fourth of five Music City Division events. The boater with the most points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 21-22 on Old Hickory, will be declared the Yamaha “Be the Best” Points Leader and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.

The top 30 Music City Division boaters and co-anglers will advance to regional competition presented by B.C. Powder Oct. 29-Nov. 2 on Wheeler Lake near Rogersville, Ala., where they will go up against top competitors from the Bulldog, LBL and Shenandoah divisions for a shot at qualifying for the Wal-Mart BFL All-American – one of the most lucrative post-season tournaments in competitive angling.

2002 BFL awards could reach $7 million based on full fields.
