JASPER, Texas – Scott David of Goodrich, Texas, topped 141 competitors on Sam Rayburn Reservoir this weekend with five bass weighing 12 pounds, 7 ounces to win $8,344 and 400 points on the boater side of the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League (BFL) Cowboy Division season finale.

After qualifying for the final round of the two-day Super Tournament in seventh place with an opening day catch of five bass weighing 12 pounds, 5 ounces, David out fished runner up Jeff Buchanan of Lufkin, Texas, by 9 ounces to take the win. David, who caught the majority of his bass using a 1/2-ounce white spinnerbait, also earned a $1,000 bonus from GARMIN for winning the tournament while using one of the company’s fixed-mount sonars.

Buchanan qualified for the final round in 19t place with four bass weighing 9 pounds, 10 ounces and finished up with 11 pounds, 14 ounces to win $4,172.

David Wharton of Sam Rayburn, Texas, took third place and collected $2,086 with 10 pounds, 15 ounces. Bill Hudspeth of Kilgor, Texas, placed fourth and earned $1,808 with 10 pounds, 13 ounces, while Tony Owens of Athens, Texas, placed fifth and earned $1,669 with 10 pounds, 7 ounces.

Mike Cannon of Leesburg, Texas, won the boater Big Bass Award and collected $1,410 with a 7-pound, 15-ounce bass that he caught on a 4-inch green pumpkin brush hog.

First place in the Co-angler Division and $4,172 went to Joe Cole Jr. of Austin, Texas, who topped 141 competitors with a final round catch of four bass weighing 9 pounds, 10 ounces. Second place in the division and $2,086 went to Chris Key of Bryan, Texas, with 6 pounds, 2 ounces, while Delton Weeks of Big Sandy, Texas, took third place and $1,043 with 4 pounds, 12 ounces.

Steve Howell of San Augustine, Texas, won the co-angler Big Bass Award of $705 with a 4-pound, 8-ounce bass that he caught on an 8-inch worm.

Boater Chris McCall of Jasper, Texas, won $500 as the highest finishing participant in the Ranger Cup incentive program. He finished in sixth place with 10 pounds, 2 ounces.

Dreabon Joiner of Pickton, Texas, landed the Divisional Points Championship and $1,000 with 1,143 points won during five regular season tournaments. Bill Rogers of Jasper, Texas, landed the Co-Angler Points Championship and $500 with 1,048 points.

The top 30 boaters and top 30 co-anglers in the Cowboy Division will advance to regional competition Oct. 16-20 on the Red River near Shreveport, La., where they will go up against top competitors from the Okie, Arkie and Mississippi divisions for a shot at qualifying for the BFL All-American, which features an estimated purse of $345,000 and ranks as one of the most lucrative post-season tournaments in competitive angling. The top two boaters and co-anglers may also qualify for the Ranger M1 tournament in Mobile, Ala., Feb. 27-March 2, 2002, where they can win up to $1 million.
