Young wins Wal-Mart BFL Super Tournament on Rend Lake
Jim Young of Roodhouse, Ill., topped 69 competitors on Rend Lake this weekend with five bass weighing 10 pounds, 9 ounces to win $5,107 and 400 points on the boater side of the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League (BFL) Illini Division season finale.

WHITTINGTON, Ill. - Jim Young of Roodhouse, Ill., topped 69 competitors on Rend Lake this weekend with five bass weighing 10 pounds, 9 ounces to win $5,107 and 400 points on the boater side of the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League (BFL) Illini Division season finale.

After qualifying for the final round of the two-day Super Tournament in fifth place with an opening day catch of three bass weighing 7 pounds, 3 ounces, Young out fished runner up Hilton Jones by 5 pounds, 7 ounces to take the win. Young also earned a $1,000 bonus from Ranger Boats as the highest finishing participant in the Ranger Cup incentive program.

Jones qualified for the final round in second place with five bass weighing 9 pounds and finished up with a final round catch weighing 5 pounds, 2 ounces to win $2,553.

Charles Rutherford of Moro, Ill., took third place and collected $1,277 with 3 pounds, 8 ounces. Steven Warfield of Brimfield, Ill., placed fourth and earned $1,107 with 3 pounds, 5 ounces, while Greg Fender of Salem, Ill., placed fifth and earned $1,021 with 3 pounds, 2 ounces.

Jeff Henson of Bloomington, Ill., won the boater Big Bass Award and collected $690 with a 4-pound, 7-ounce bass on opening day.

First place in the Co-angler Division and $2,553 went to Jim Funsch of Springfield, Ill., who topped 69 competitors with a final round catch of two bass weighing 4 pounds, 7 ounces.First place in the Co-Angler Division and $2,553 went to Jim Funsch of Springfield, Ill., who topped 69 competitors with a final round catch of two bass weighing 4 pounds, 7 ounces. Second place in the division and $1,277 went to Daniel Clark of Frankfort, Ill., with 3 pounds, 15 ounces, while Jeff Reiher of Oak Forest, Ill., took third place and $638 with 2 pounds, 7 ounces.

Steve Brown of Danville, Ill., won the co-angler Big Bass Award of $345 with a 4-pound, 6-ounce bass on opening day.

Wayne Shaw of Urbana, Ill., landed the Divisional Points Championship and $1,000 with 1,114 points won during five regular season tournaments. Tony Greene of Mt. Vernon, Ill., landed the Co-Angler Points Championship and $500 with 1,101 points.

The top 30 boaters and top 30 co-anglers in the Illini Division will advance to regional competition Oct. 9-13 on Weiss Lake near Cedar Bluff, Ala., where they will go up against top competitors from the Carolina, Ozark and Choo Choo divisions for a shot at qualifying for the BFL All-American, which features an estimated purse of $345,000 and ranks as one of the most lucrative post-season tournaments in competitive angling. The top two boaters and co-anglers may also qualify for the Ranger M1 tournament in Mobile, Ala., Feb. 27-March 2, 2002, where they can win up to $1 million in the world's richest freshwater tournament.

Awards for the 2001 BFL season could reach $5.7 million based on full fields at each tournament.
