Final five FLW anglers battle it out for first place on Red River

SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER, La. – Under mostly cloudy skies and increasingly humid conditions, the final five pro anglers took off from Clark’s Marina shortly after 6:30 a.m. with one goal in mind: Landing the top prize of $100,000. However, while all of the anglers have plans to fish in shallow water, their ultimate destinations on the Red River are as diverse as their preferred bait selections.

Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., has a 2 1/2-hour roundtrip excursion planned – the longest trip proposed by any angler – while Bill Chapman of Salt Rock, W.Va., and Dan Morehead of Paducah, Ky., have their sights set on a few locations within earshot of the marina. Dwayne Horton of Knoxville, Tenn., and Craig Powers of Rockwood, Tenn., will probably fish somewhere in between.

As far as bait selection is concerned, Powers hinted that he would continue to flip a jig, Chapman most likely will pitch a tube bait, VanDam will flip a spinnerbait in dirty backwater while Morehead will use a combination of tube baits, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits. Horton’s bait selection of choice was unclear as of takeoff.

Today’s weigh-in is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Wal-Mart Supercenter located at 6235 Westport Road in Shreveport. The Wal-Mart FLW Tour Family Fun Zone will open in the Wal-Mart parking lot at 11 a.m.
