The first event of the season for the Rayovac FLW Series Western Division on Lake Havasu, which is presented by Mercury, didn't start the way many anglers expected. Consecutive days of no wind and lots of sunshine have made the morning bite tricky to time – feeding conditions are not ideal.

Many of the anglers that the on-the-water crew was able to track down reported only one or two fish in their livewells. Most of the coverage has been from Lake Havasu State Park down south near the Steamboat area.

Conditions started out with cool air and a slight breeze, but that breeze has since disappeared, and the sun is high. There is also a significant algae bloom across the lake that has left the water with a slight stain to it. Some of the anglers acknowledged that the stained water could be partially to blame for the slow start. Despite that, a large portion of the field can be found probing the various pockets that line Lake Havasu, and most reported seeing quality fish cruising up shallow.

With the sun out and the water heating up, the stage is set for a solid afternoon bite. Many of the heavy favorites – Jimmy Reese, Joe Uribe Jr., Roy Hawk and Brett Hite among them – believe that fishing will improve in the final hours. If the pros can convert on the fish they saw cruising the bank this morning then weigh-in should be one heck of a show.
