Day-Three Ups and Downs

What goes up – as in up the standings – apparently must come down. For Castrol pro Philip Jarabeck, day three of competition at the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup has been a struggle. He’s not been able to rekindle the magic of day two, when he brought in a 17-pound limit to take over the tournament lead from his uncle and fellow Castrol pro, David Dudley.

Dudley also experienced the ebb and flow of major tournament bass fishing competition. He followed up the opening day’s best limit of 17 pounds, 14 ounces with 6-1 yesterday to fall to sixth place.

Consistency is king this week, overshadowing the occasional “upper-teens” limit that, thus far, has been nearly impossible to repeat.

Brent Ehrler has been most consistent. His limits of 13-5 and 12-7 in the opening rounds positioned him in second place coming into today, and on-the-water reporters estimate his current limit at more than 12 pounds. He’s found a pattern that is working every day, and it could very well earn him his second Forrest Wood Cup title.

Casey Ashley is another angler to watch right now. He was working with a 12-pound limit at around 12:30. His action hasn’t been nonstop, but here-and-there bites all seem to be from quality fish.

However, the biggest story from the third day thus far has to be Straight Talk Wireless pro Scott Canterbury’s morning blitz. He’s got a big one that was estimated at almost 6 pounds and was culling thick-shouldered bass at lunchtime. He’ll have his third straight double-digit bag today at weigh-in. Bryan Thrift and Anthony Gagliardi also have limits, and a few others are threatening to make big moves today. One big fish for either of those anglers could bring him within reach of the lead.
