The hunt for a second AOY

Andy Morgan proves he is a model of consistency with a two-day total of 29-12 to sit in fifth after day two.

Editor's Note: The writer's opinions and observations expressed here are his own, and do not necessarily reflect or represent the views, policies or positions of FLW. It's been a big few weeks for a country boy. I was honored and humbled to receive two fantastic awards over the past month. First, the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame selected me as the 2013 Co-Male Athlete of the Year. The Chattanooga area is rich in sports tradition, and I am proud to have received this recognition from its members. The second honor came from Bassfan.com, one of bass fishing's premier media outlets, where I became its No. 1 ranked angler in the world. Considering the many outstanding bass fishermen in the game today, it really means a lot to me. I've also had a very good start to the 2014 season. I began at Lake Okeechobee with a 13th-place finish and then placed second on Lake Hartwell. I take one tournament at a time and stay focused, but in the big picture I'd love to become the second back-to-back Angler of the Year winner in Walmart FLW Tour history. Only David Dudley has reached that lofty goal, winning consecutive AOY titles in 2011 and 2012. I'm proud once again to be running a Bullet Bass Boat powered by Evinrude. I will also be representing Zoom soft plastics, Livingston Lures hard baits, War Eagle spinnerbaits, Sheffield Financial and New Breed Archery. For years Zoom and War Eagle have been setting the bar for quality soft plastics and spinnerbaits, respectively, and Livingston Lures is changing the game in hard baits. I've also created a few signature fishing rods for iRod, and I'm excited with how they turned out. Dealers already have my heavy flippin' stick in stock, and a lighter flippin' stick/junk-fishing rod is on the way to dealers now. Be sure to check those out if you're in the market for a new rod. On the TV front, I'm excited to be a part of another season of Moultrie's The Hit List in 2014. This will be the fifth season of the show; you can catch it on the Outdoor Channel. Going forward, I hope to blog on FLWOutdoors.com quite a bit this year and share some insights from the road, as well as fishing tips and maybe even a hunting tip or two as we go along. For now, though, I'll sign off, taking the opportunity again in this, my first blog, to thank the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame and Bassfan.com for the recognition they bestowed upon me recently. To receive two such honors has really been a great experience.

Blog: What Might Have Been at Eufaula

Lake Eufaula is in the books, but ever since the tournament I haven’t slept very well. If you know me, you know I just “love” losing fish, but I think this latest event was the worst of my career. I finished 12th, which isn’t so bad, but the “what could have beens” got me again. On the last day of practice, I caught nearly 30 pounds, including one around 10 pounds and a 7 1/2-pounder, making it a day I’ll never forget. READ MORE »

Blog: Frogging of a Different Kind

As a bass fisherman, I have a special feeling for that time of year when I can start fishing a frog again. I’m not sure if the rush of adrenaline I feel is from that first explosion when a bass crashes the frog, or the anticipation of it. Whatever it is, I love it! READ MORE »

I’m not going to sugarcoat it: I’m bombarded with an array of emotions and a new to-do list every day. I’m not good enough. I don’t have the money. Make a Facebook post. Call mom. Morgan Retains Lead At Walmart FLW Tour On Beaver Lake Presented By Rayovac

ROGERS, Ark. (April 25, 2015) – Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tennessee, caught a five-bass limit weighing 10 pounds, 9 ounces Saturday to retain the lead on day three of the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Rayovac. Morgan’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 39 pounds, 2 ounces gives him a... READ MORE »

Morgan Maintains His Lead

One of Andy Morgan’s fishing mottos is to make the best of what you have got “in front of you” to survive and fish another day. Beaver Lake doesn’t give much. So when an angler as resourceful as Morgan gets to a lake that doesn’t give out many resources, the two work well together. Instead of worrying about hitting it out of the park or putting immense pressure on himself to come up with a grand winning strategy, Morgan just scraps, scrapes and claws at the ground right in front of him, making the best of what he’s got. Morgan’s performance on day three of the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Rayovac on Beaver Lake was a prime example of his “make the best of it” attitude. After burning up the spawning fish he had located in practice during the first two days of the tournament, he was forced to fish by the seat of his pants today – something he thoroughly enjoys. Morgan Grabs Lead After Day Two Of Walmart FLW Tour On Beaver Lake Presented By Rayovac

ROGERS, Ark. (April 24, 2015) – The weather threw anglers another curveball Friday morning at the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Rayovac. After cold and wind greeted anglers on Thursday, heavy rainfall and lightning was the story today, prompting FLW Tournament Director Bill Taylor to delay takeoff 45 minutes due to the lightning and low visibility.. Make Way for Morgan

“Hidden largemouths” is quickly becoming the buzz term at the Walmart FLW Tour event on Beaver Lake presented by Rayovac, as those atop the leaderboard are using the term to refer to spawning largemouths that are so well hidden that other competitors never found them. These hidden fish are covered by thick brush, hidden so deep that they were only found during the very rare windows of sunshine during practice or located off the beaten path. The latter are not in obvious pockets or places where one would expect to find beds, but rather out on the main bluff channels where few ever look. On day one, Jacob Wheeler caught hidden largemouths to take the lead. On day two, former Beaver Lake champion Andy Morgan caught hidden largemouths to take over the pole position going into the weekend. His catch of 15 pounds, 7 ounces today gives Morgan a two-day total of 28-09 to take the lead by just 11 ounces. READ MORE »

Blog: East vs. West

I’m not going to say the West is better than the East, or vice-versa. However, I am going to say that where fishing is concerned, there are some distinct differences between the two. The list is long and I’m sure that you can think of many additional differences, but here are a few things I have found that separates the two locales. For the purposes of this blog, let’s make the dividing line the Mississippi River although I think we should include Texas with the East. READ MORE »
