Leading up to the Walmart FLW Tour Lake Hartwell event, ten FLW Tour pros took time out of their busy schedules to visit four area schools on March 5 to talk to students during school assemblies about science, engineering, technology, math, meteorology. The pros - Greg Bohannan, Koby Kreiger, Bill Day, Scott Martin, Vic Vatalaro, Jim Tutt, Dustin Grice, James Watson, Jay Yelas and Tim Malone - focused on how they used those various disciplines when preparing for a tournament. During the second half of the visit, the anglers took the students outside to see their trucks and boats and learn about boating safety.
The participating school included:
* James M. Brown Elementary
* Westminster Elementary
* Seneca High School
* T.L. Hanna High School
In preparation for the visit, students at all four schools wrote essays as part of the Get Outdoors. Go Fish! essay contest. Elementary school students focused on the topic: "What is your favorite outdoor activity?" High school students tackled: "How do science, technology, engineering and math apply to the sport of fishing?"
Altogether, over 330 essays were submitted. All essay submissions were compelling and observers routinely stated that the excitement of the students was noticeable. Some teachers even mentioned that the students had been anticipating this visit all week.
All students who submitted an essay received an FLW hat as well as a coupon for a free drawstring backpack to be claimed at the FLW Tour Lake Hartwell Expo.
As part of the essay contest, the FLW Foundation ultimately chose one winner from each participating school. Winners received a VIP fishing trip with an FLW pro on Sunday, March 9 and also will be recognized at their school assembly.
