Poitevint wins Co-angler Division

Howard Poitevint wins the Co-angler Divsion of the EverStart Series event on Lake Okeechobee with a three-day total of 40 pounds, 13 ounces.

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. - For Howard Poitevint of Bainbridge, Ga., his entire tournament came down to his last cast of the final day. In the last minute rush to work out of an area and head to weigh-in, his pro partner had missed casting to two tiny reed stems that were sticking out just above the water. Just as the call for "last cast" was made, Poitevint heaved a cast at the two discreet stems, his line moved off sideways, he set the hook, and the rest is history. The result of that last cast was a 7-pound, 13-ounce bass that gave Poitevint a push to victory in the Co-angler Division of the EverStart Series event on Lake Okeechobee. "This feels great," Poitevint said. "I've been tournament fishing a long time. I've won buddy tournaments, been to the All-American and barely missed winning a Regional (BFL) years ago to David Fritts. So to get this win here on the EverStart level is special to me."Howard Poitevint hoists his tournament-winning bass, a 7-13 brute that he caught on the last cast of the day. Poitevint claimed the big bass in the Co-angler Division on day two with an 8-12. And then his 7-13 bass today propelled him to victory. They key to his big bites? "A Zoom Ultra-Vibe speed worm in junebug," Poitevint said. "That's what I caught all my big fish on this week. Yesterday I used a 1/8-ounce weight. Today it was a little windier and I had to go to 3/16-ounce weight, all on 20-pound test Stren line." "I caught some fish swimming the worm," he added. "But the two big ones I caught came from pitching it to reeds and letting fall." Wood second William Wood of West Palm Beach, Fla., finished second in the Co-angler Division with a three-day total of 37 pounds, 11 ounces worth $5,000.William Wood of West Palm Beach, Fla., finished second in the Co-angler Division with a three-day total of 37 pounds, 11 ounces worth $5,000. Wood's primary lure during the week was a watermelon red lizard, rigged with a 3/16-ounce weight on 50-pound braided line. "That's what I caught the big limit on the first day," Wood said. "But today I switched to a black and blue Senko wacky-rigged on a shiner-style hook." Guerra third Raymond Guerra of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., finished third in the Co-angler Division with a three-day total of 35 pounds even worth $4,000. Top 5 Patterns From Seminole Day 2

A shake-up occurred on day two of the Rayovac FLW Series presented by Evinrude on Lake Seminole. Day one was all about slow, summertime fishing in the lake’s deep timber. Overnight a frontal passage dropped water and air temperatures and left a north wind howling down the lake. As a result, the timber bite cooled off and those fishing shallower waters climbed up the leaderboard. READ MORE »

Lake Seminole Midday Update

Lake Seminole is known to be more of a quality lake than a quantity lake and that trait showed on the morning of day one as anglers who were catching fish were not necessarily getting many bites, but 3-pound pluses seemed to be the norm for the ones hauled in over the gunnel. READ MORE »

Seminole Summer

Last week, the Walmart FLW Tour plied the waters of the Chattahoochee River on Lake Eufaula. This week, the Rayovac FLW Series moves 60 miles south on the “Hooch” to Lake Seminole for the final event of the Southeast Division. Running offshore brush piles was the dominant theme on Eufaula last week, leaving some to wonder if a similar pattern could work on Seminole, since the two legendary lakes are connected by the same river. Top 10 Patterns from Lake Eufaula

Bryan Thrift won the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Quaker State on Lake Eufaula by keying on isolated pieces of cover – brush piles, stumps, logs, rocks, etc. – for four days and hitting as many spots as possible during competition hours. Others in the top 10 fished a very similar program, but there were a few wild cards. Here’s the rundown of Eufaula’s top finishers. READ MORE »

Thrift by 3

The “numbers game.” It’s a term that Bryan Thrift used to describe his fishing on Lake Eufaula back in 2013 when he finished runner-up to Randy Haynes in a Walmart FLW Tour event. The method to his numbers madness was to hit as many solitary objects – stumps, brush piles, rocks, logs – on the bottom of Lake Eufaula as humanly possible in an eight-hour tournament day. When Thrift saw that Lake Eufaula was back on the 2015 Walmart FLW Tour schedule for May of this year, he grinned that patented Bryan Thrift grin because he already knew how to crunch the numbers at Eufaula. And Thrift is still grinning. After sacking up a final-day catch of 15 pounds, 5 ounces to top off 69-14 for the week, Thrift made the numbers work for his fourth FLW Tour win. He added another $125,000 to his bank account. READ MORE »

Morrow Marches Ahead

Day two at the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Quaker State at Lake Eufaula challenged anglers with tougher conditions as clouds and wind hindered much of the offshore bite. But while some of the top 10 struggled to duplicate their success from day one, Troy Morrow moved from second up into the driver's seat with a day-two catch of 18 pounds, 1 ounce. His total for the event stands at 39-09, giving him a 1-04 lead over day-one leader Clent Davis. READ MORE »

Sweet as Honeycutt

Keith Honeycutt knows how to fish his way to the tournament podium. The veteran Texas co-angler has won multiple FLW tournaments, including the 2013 Walmart FLW Tour event at Grand Lake. Still, when Honeycutt hoisted the FLW Tour co-angler champion’s trophy over his head on stage this afternoon at Lake Eufaula, he celebrated with great joy because he knows how difficult it is to attain that level of success against the best amateur anglers in the world. “It doesn’t come around very often,” says Honeycutt, who edged out Japan’s Hiroyuki Watanabe by just 2 ounces with a two-day total of 22 pounds, 12 ounces. “It’s hard to get two pro partners who fish a way that you can catch them too.” READ MORE »

Davis Leads Stacked Top 10

Ordinarily, when four professional bass anglers catch more than 20 pounds on the first day of a major tournament on Lake Eufaula in early summer, no one is surprised. This week, however, Eufaula is a bit off its game due to a cocktail of challenging conditions. Pros expected this to be a low-weight event. It won’t be, if the day-one weights are any indication. Clent Davis of Montevallo, Ala., weighed in a five-bass limit that registered 22 pounds, 9 ounces to take the lead by 1-01 over Georgia pro Troy Morrow. Adrian Avena and Ramie Colson Jr. are tied for third with 20-10, while the next five in the standings all topped 18 pounds. READ MORE »

Adapt or die. That pretty well sums up co-angler Jack Farage’s runaway win at the Rayovac FLW Series Western Division event presented by Ranger Boats on the California Delta this week. Obviously, the Discovery Bay, Calif., co-angler adapted – he changed baits every day – and made all the right moves. Farage opened the tournament with a massive 26-pound limit, followed with 11-11 yesterday and then blew the competition away with 16-14 today.
