Fantasy blog: Trap bite is hot

We’re still three weeks away from the FLW Tour season opener on Lake Guntersville, but the rumor mill is alive and well. According to a few pros that live in the area, the Rat-L-Trap bite is putting quality largemouths in the boat.

During the winter and prespawn months, the Rat-L-Trap is effective because it dives to the edges of Guntersville’s dormant grass beds. It also has a wobbling, erratic motion that tempts lethargic bass, even in cold water. The action of the lure resembles a distressed baitfish and predators believe they have just encountered an easy meal.

As your Fantasy Fishing roster takes shape in the coming weeks, keep a keen eye on those who excel with the Trap. One angler I’m looking closely at is BP pro J.T. Kenney. Although he is best known for his flipping prowess, Kenney isn’t afraid to pick up a Trap. In fact, he used a Berkley Frenzy Rattler last year to win the FLW Series opener on Okeechobee.

I’ve already got Craig Dowling on my roster, but not for the obvious reasons. Dowling lives near the lake, but he grew up near Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn. For those who are unaware, Rayburn has grass beds that are eerily similar to Guntersville. Dowling has both local knowledge and extensive experience with the Rat-L-Trap, which could prove to be a deadly combination.
