Virtual Championship 2006

Opening round – Bracket 12: Rojas vs. Bolton

Another exciting season of tour-level pro bass fishing drew to a close in record-smashing fashion on Lake Champlain, leaving only the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship on the horizon before 2006 is etched forever in the history books. FLWOutdoors.com will once again host its own “virtual championship” – a featured daily poll where readers can make their own picks and weigh in on who they think will be crowned champion during the Aug. 2-5 year-ending event on Logan Martin Lake in Birmingham, Ala.

In the days leading up to the championship, FLWOutdoors.com will ask readers to vote on who they think will advance in each of the daily bracket challenges (polls are located on the right-hand side of the FLW Outdoors and FLW Tour home pages). After each day’s votes are tabulated, the virtual championship bracket will be immediately updated to reflect the readers’ choices.

Will fishing fans correctly forecast the winner of this year’s championship? Vote each day to support your favorite qualified angler and to learn more about the 48 pros who will actually compete on Logan Martin Lake for a top prize of $500,000.

Today’s featured bracket matchup: Dean Rojas (No. 12) vs. Terry Bolton (No. 37)

Dean Rojas – No. 12 seed: Dean Rojas is a six-year veteran of the FLW Tour, having earned $365,000 and half a dozen top-10s along the trail. Last year marked his best one yet on tour, when the Grand Saline, Texas, pro started off the season with a third-place finish on Lake Okeechobee and then finished with an amazing fourth-place finish at the championship on Lake Hamilton. Rojas fished consistently this year, including a top-20 performance on Kentucky Lake, to be seeded 12th going into the year-end championship on Logan Martin Lake in Alabama. Rojas is a three-time qualifier for the big show, and his past championship performance on Logan Martin – 15th – bodes well for him in this year’s season-ending event on the same body of water. Rojas is a perennial performer, but some of his best fishing has taken place under championship conditions.

Terry Bolton – No. 37 seed: Paducah, Ky., pro Terry Bolton has been with the FLW Tour since the beginning, and his veteran status will undoubtedly serve him well when hits championship waters on Logan Martin Lake for this year’s season-ending event. Over the last decade of full-time fishing on the tour, Bolton has only missed four championships. More importantly, in the six bass-fishing spectaculars he’s attended, he’s given it his all, registering two top-10 finishes and never placing lower than 31st. What’s more, despite Bolton having earned nearly $380,000 and 32 top-10s across his FLW Outdoors career, he’s still in search of a tour-level win. Bolton hasn’t fished a championship since 2003, and he fell just short of picking up an FLW Tour win when he grabbed the runner-up slot at this year’s Kentucky Lake event. Translation: Bolton will be as hungry as anyone for the championship win.
