Tournament preview: Forrest Wood Open, FLW Lake St. Clair, June 20-23

2001 Forrest Wood Open
FLW Tour Stop #6
Lake St. Clair, Mich.
June 20-23

Lake St. Clair located near Detroit is one of the greatest smallmouth bass fisheries in America and site of the 2001 Forrest Wood Open featuring a $1 million purse. Gigantic Lake Huron flows into Lake St. Clair via the St. Clair River. The lake then empties into the Detroit River, which flows into Lake Erie. It is a massive water system with the smallest natural lake in the chain, Lake St. Clair, covering over 560 square miles.

St. Clair is not a deep lake. The average depth is only 11 feet. The lake has a lot of submerged vegetation in it, including milfoil, cabbage and coontail moss. The majority of the bass fishing is not shoreline-related. Instead, it involves finding offshore grass lines and scattered rocks where huge schools of smallmouth congregate.

According to local angler David Reault of Livonia, Mich., who finished fourth in the last FLW tournament on Lake St. Clair, the area enjoyed an early spring with the water warming up quickly. Then, it started raining and turning colder near the end of May, which has delayed the transition from spring to summer patterns.

"I believe during the tournament that there will be both spawn and post-spawn bass caught," Reault said. "The most productive depth will be from 5 to 12 feet deep."

The tournament date coincides with the peak of the mayfly hatch. Millions and millions of mayflies blanket the surface of the lake during a hatch, and the smallmouth gorge on the tiny insects.

Fishing a topwater lure, such as a Rebel Pop-R, is a strong pattern in June. Mornings are usually the best time to capitalize on the insect bite because mayflies hatch at night.

May and June is also a time when spawning alewives invade St. Clair. Bass readily devour the minnows. Reault's favorite technique is to fish scattered weeds on flats with a minnow-colored jerkbait. For weeds deeper than 8 feet, he often switches to a bright-colored jerkbait to "draw" the fish up from the depths.

Wendlandt's wisdom

2000 Wal-Mart FLW Tour Angler of the Year Clark Wendlandt of Cedar Park, Texas, has been anticipating the great fishing at St. Clair since the schedule was announced.

"The fishing is as good as it gets," Wendlandt declared.

Wendlandt will spend his time in open water fishing the massive flats sporting grass beds. His top lures will be a shad-colored Husky Jerk, a Zara Spook and a Skitter Pop.

Wendlandt may also utilized a popular technique for St. Clair's open, windy waters - dragging a tube. Using a 1/4-ounce lead head with a pumpkin-colored plastic tube lure, anglers drift across flats in 8 to 12 feet of water until they locate a huge school of smallmouth.

Local attractions

The Detroit area hosts an almost unlimited variety of entertainment. Downtown there is gaming at the Greek Town, MGM Grand and MotorCity Casinos.

For something educational as well as entertaining, visit the Henry Ford Museum. Adults can learn to start and drive an original 1924 model T Ford. Children can learn about a variety of subjects, including how glass marbles are made. They can also join other children in a "house raising." Assembling a house inside the museum teaches children how to use tools and work as a team. For more information, call (313) 982-6055.

The Michigan Wine and Food Festival will make its debut June 22-24. Twenty-one Michigan wineries will present more than 100 wines for sampling and winemakers will explain the art of winemaking. More than 20 specialty food vendors from around the state will also be present to highlight locally produced gourmet food items, including smoked fish, specialty cheeses and a variety of jams and jellies. For more info, call (800) 600-0307.

MDJ, Fitzgerald Battle for AOY

The Southeast Division of the Rayovac FLW Series will wrap up this week on Lake Seminole after what has been an action-packed season complete with record fields and 30-pound stringers. On top of battling for the $40,000 top prize for winning the event, anglers will also be competing to claim the Strike King Angler of the Year award and its $2,000 prize package, which includes deposits into the 2016 FLW Series. The AOY finale is likely to be a two-man race between Mark Daniels Jr. and Trevor Fitzgerald, but several other pros are within range of stealing away the title. Here’s how it breaks down. Shad Spawn, Grass Could be a Factor

While the offshore specialists have discounted the ability to win the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Quaker State on Lake Eufaula on a shallow pattern, their quickness to count out the shallows might be premature. Eufaula’s shallow bite is nearly always strong, and it has only gotten better in recent years. READ MORE »

Practice with Clayton Batts

Of the locals in the field for the Walmart FLW Tour event on Lake Eufaula, sophomore pro Clayton Batts is about as local as they come. He has roots all around Eufaula and has about as much experience as anyone on the lake. Typically he competes out of a Ranger wrapped by Mid-State RV Center, but motor troubles had forced him to miss some practice time and borrow a boat from FLW Tour co-angler Josh Weaver. Luckily, he is well-equipped will local knowledge to make up for lost time. I joined him for a few hours the last morning of official practice to see how he approached the lake. READ MORE »

Eufaula’s Offshore Bite Could be Hot

When the Walmart FLW Tour stopped at Lake Eufaula in 2013, Randy Haynes plied a handful of offshore spots for his winning limits, and he did it without much company. That figures to change this time around as the offshore pattern will be on everyone’s radar when the fourth stop of the 2015 Tour kicks off on Lake Eufaula on Thursday in an event presented by Quaker State. High-Water Rayburn

When the Rayovac FLW Series hits Sam Rayburn April 9-11 for the second stop of the Texas Division, the story won’t be solely based on the giants that the lake is known for – it will also be about the extremely high water level. For the first time in years, Rayburn is topping her banks in a big way. Currently, the lake is about 5 feet above full pool, which is even more remarkable when you consider that the lake has been well below full pool most of the last few years. READ MORE »

5 Pros to Watch at Lewis Smith

The second stop of the Walmart FLW Tour season rolls to Lewis Smith Lake – or “Smith” as most refer to it – which is located in northern Alabama. It offers a stark contrast to the first event held on Toho, as the fishery is a clear, deep impoundment with little grass to speak of. Traditionally spotted bass have dominated this tournament due to their abundance and better average size. That will likely be the case again this week, however, largemouth may surprise some people since water temperatures are prime for them to swarm the bank. Smith Lake is often overshadowed by its neighboring lakes of Guntersville and Wheeler but has pumped out several world-class spotted bass over the years. In fact, back in the 1970s and 1980s several world record spots were produced in Smith, and the current 8-pound, 15-ounce Alabama state record was caught from here. READ MORE »

Spotted Bass Reign Supreme at Smith

When the Walmart FLW Tour visited Alabama’s Lewis Smith Lake in March 2013, Brent Ehrler dominated wire-to-wire by amassing a hefty 60 pound, 9 ounces over four days and besting runner-up Jacob Powroznik by more than 7 pounds. Catching 60 pounds over four days is a pretty stout performance on most bodies of water, but the fact that Ehrler was targeting spotted bass more or less exclusively makes it truly special. In general, spotted bass are a whole lot of fun to catch, but usually don’t grow shoulders thick enough to produce tournament stringers that can rival their cousins, largemouth bass. READ MORE »

/news/2015-03-23-last-time-at-lewis-smith

Last Time at Lewis Smith

It’s been two seasons since the Walmart FLW Tour visited Lewis Smith Lake in Jasper, Ala. Now that the Tour has rolled back into town for the start of official practice on “Smith,” as most pros prefer to call this deep, clear reservoir, there’s an important change that could have a real impact on the tournament’s outcome: The umbrella rig is no longer allowed in Tour competition. Last time, a number of top pros relied on the multi-lure rig for the bulk of their catches, and winner Brent Ehrler caught a key kicker with one on the final day. This year’s event will be held a couple of weeks later in the month, which could mean the fish will be a little farther along in their prespawn-to-spawn transition and shallower patterns could be in play (possibly bed-fishing among them; see 2008: Spawners and Spots below). Still, the 2013 event is the best, most current preview of what we can expect to see this week, so we dug a little deeper into the most productive patterns from the last bout on Smith. READ MORE »

College Open will be a Record-Setter

When the first FLW College Fishing Open tournament gets underway out of Moor’s Resort on Kentucky Lake Friday morning, it will make history as the largest college event ever staged. Typically, college tournaments are staged as divisional events where only teams from a particular geographical region can participate, but the Open marks the first time any eligible college team can compete. The response to the new format has been overwhelming. According to FLW College Fishing Tournament Director Kevin Hunt, 184 teams representing colleges and universities from coast to coast are entered (as of this morning), and more might be en route. Teams have until Thursday evening at 6 to register at the rules meeting. READ MORE »

Toho: 5 Factors to Consider

The Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Mercury on Lake Toho will give the 154 pros in the field a taste of a lake that is relatively unfamiliar compared to places like Lake Chickamauga or homey Okeechobee, where the Tour has made recent or frequent stops.
