Kavros Wacky-Rigs Way to Co-Angler Crown
Bed-fishing tournaments are rarely banner tournaments for co-anglers. While pros are fixated on working fish, co-anglers are often left casting out to presumably dead water. Chuck Kavros didn’t see it that way.
Listening to some good advice from his practice partner and pro Cody Meyer, Kavros sacked up 22 pounds, 2 ounces en route to the co-angler crown for the Walmart FLW Tour event at Lake Hartwell which was presented by Evinrude and hosted by the Anderson Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“Cody (Meyer) told me to stick with a wacky-rigged Yamamoto Senko,” says Kavros of Grass Valley, California. “I don’t think I threw anything else more than maybe 15 minutes in the two days.”
While his pros – Mike Surman on Day 1 and Travis Fox on Day 2 – did mainly sight-fish, Kavros used his ample time in the back of the boat to pick apart every piece of cover, shade, etc. in the area with his wacky rig. While he did catch a couple off nearby docks, most of his fish came from open areas. His biggest fish that anchored his 9-pound, 4-ounce Day 2 bag came off a long underwater point.
“I’d cast it out, let the Senko fall to the bottom and then just twitch it back in along the bottom,” says Kavros. “Color didn’t seem to matter, though I mainly used green pumpkin.”
Kavros admits he never dreamed of winning a tournament, as he didn’t even take fishing seriously up until roughly a decade ago. Still, he couldn’t thank the likes of Meyer, Jimmy Reese and fellow co-angler Gary Haraguchi for helping teach him. Obviously, he’s a good student.
