Lake Texoma is showing its stingy side as Rayovac FLW Series anglers ply this Ouachita River reservoir for day two of the final Texas Division event. The weather is nice, with sunny skies and moderate wind, but the first half of the day was painfully slow for the handful of boats we followed.

As of 11:30, day-one leader Joe Don Setina had four keepers, one of which looked to be about 2 1/2 pounds. Returning to the pattern that yielded 20 pounds, 9 ounces on the tournament’s opening day, Setina spent the morning pocket hopping in search of cooperative bed fish.

Most of his spots were in thick brush, usually at the backs of pockets. Several times, he had to lift his trolling motor to clear the vines entangling his prop.

Three times, Setina commented that the big fish he had located was gone. The fish might have done their thing and left, or another angler may have caught them. Either way, Setina’s morning was fairly slow.

Some of the anglers reported some of their spots had muddied since day one. Winds were a little more brisk today, so that may have moved some sediment.

Setina and fellow competitor Kelly Owens both noted that their better bites turned on after midday, so it will be interesting to see what the afternoon delivers. Look for significant leaderboard shuffling.

One to watch: Del Rio, Texas pro Ray Hanselman placed third on day one with 17-2. With back-to-back Texas Division wins on Lake Amistad and Sam Rayburn Reservoir, he’s leading the Angler of the Year race.
