MARBURY, Md. (June 10, 2014) - The Rayovac FLW Series is headed to the Potomac River June 19-21 for a tournament presented by Evinrude where as many as 300 pros and co-anglers will take to the water for the first stop of 2014 in the Northern Division.
"My favorite thing about the Potomac is that you have a lot of fishable water," said Evinrude pro Scott Martin, who won a Walmart FLW Tour event there in 2012. "The whole river is good. This time of the year the fish will be postspawn and it will fish really similar to how I won two years ago. Everything is a little behind schedule this year though."
Martin said that he thought moving baits like crankbaits, spinnerbaits and Z-Man Original ChatterBaits would be effective in addition to flipping soft plastics around the river's plentiful grass beds.
"There are two flipping approaches," explained the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup champion. "One is a lighter weight where you will flip the scattered grass or shoreline wood. The second flipping deal is more of a punching setup where you will actually look for mats of grass around low tide.
"There are ways to catch them on every tide depending on what someone is comfortable with. I ran the river quite a bit to follow the tides when I won. But, some guys might be more comfortable just sitting in an area and waiting for the tide to get right.
"The Potomac is a pretty consistent fishery," said Martin. "I would say that 19 pounds per day will earn the win."
Anglers will take off from Smallwood State Park located at 2750 Sweden Point Road in Marbury, Md., at 6 a.m. daily. Weigh-ins will be held at the launch site beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Saturday's final weigh-in will take place at 3:30 p.m. at Walmart, located at 40 Drury Drive in La Plata, Md. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z117 with 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.
