Rayovac Series moves to James River

Anglers assemble at Osborne Boat Landing on the James River for Wednesday's takeoff.

RICHMOND, Va. - The Rayovac FLW Series is headed to the James River May 1-3 for a tournament presented by Mercury when as many as 300 pros and co-anglers take to the water for the first of three stops in the Northern Division. "The bass spawn is going to be in full swing for the Rayovac tournament," said Castrol pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Va., a three-time Walmart FLW Tour Angler of the Year winner. "I think most of the tournament anglers will be targeting the spawning areas around the lily pads, lily pad stems and tules. The bulk of the fish will be in three feet of water or less." Dudley said that he expects anglers will catch fish throughout the week using ChatterBaits, flipping soft plastics and throwing Yamamoto Senkos. As is typical for tournaments held on the James River, anglers will have to decide whether to stay or make a long run to the Chickahominy River to target the robust bass population there. "I think if a guy can catch nine pounds a day he'll get a check," Dudley went on to say. "I think it'll take around 281/2-pounds to make the top-10 cut and the winner will probably have right around 46 pounds." Anglers will take off from the Osborne Landing located at 9680 Osborne Turnpike in Richmond, Va., at 6:30 a.m. each day. Weigh-ins will also be held at Osborne Landing each day beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public. Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z117 with 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. The Rayovac FLW Series consists of five divisions - Central, Northern, Southeast, Texas and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments and competitors will be vying for valuable points in each division that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Rayovac FLW Series Championship. The 2014 Rayovac FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 30-Nov. 1 on Wheeler Lake in Rogersville, Ala. For complete details and updated information visit FLWOutdoors.com.
