LAVONIA, Ga. – Brandon Cobb of Greenwood, S.C., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds, 5 ounces Saturday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Savannah River Division event on Lake Hartwell. For his victory, Cobb earned $6,807.
“Everything went right for me out there,” said Cobb. “I’ve been close to winning a few times, but it’s such an awesome feeling to finally get a win.
“I knew that everyone would be targeting the areas where the herring were spawning,” Cobb continued. “During practice I located this small clay point back in a pocket that I knew I would have to myself. I could pull up on it and catch a few solid keepers, then leave for a few hours. The fish would replenish while I was gone, and I was able to pull a few limits out of there.”
Cobb caught an early limit throwing a white Zoom Super Fluke and a Knight’s Custom Lures Tri Blade spinnerbait, then moved shallow and caught a few more keepers swimming a white Knight’s Custom Lures Dock Buster jig.
“I caught around 15 keepers throughout the entire day and culled a few times,” Cobb said. “The key for me was avoiding the lake pressure. My area was not real obvious and I had that little clay point all to myself.”

The final BFL Savannah River Division tournament is scheduled for Sept. 28 on Clarks Hill Lake in Appling, Ga. After that tournament is complete, the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct. 10-12 Regional Championship on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a Chevy Silverado, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. The 2013 BFL All-American is being held June 27-29 on Nickajack Lake in Chattanooga, Tenn. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
