KUTTAWA, Ky. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Barkley Nov. 11-12 for the Chevy Wild Card event, where boaters and co-anglers will compete for berths into the prestigious Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy, the tournament that has kick-started the professional fishing career of numerous anglers.

“I’d be looking for some Alabama rigs if I was fishing the tournament,” said Prevacid pro Dan Morehead of Paducah, Ky. “I have a feeling that’s going to be the bait of choice for a lot of guys.”

Morehead rode the Alabama Rig to victory last week at the EverStart Series Championship on Kentucky Lake. The Alabama rig, which exploded onto the scene during the October FLW Tour event on Lake Guntersville, consists of a hard-bait body that trails four or five wires that have a swivel attached to the end of each wire. Fishermen then tie a variety of baits – swimbaits, grubs or a variety of other artificial baits – to the swivels. The baits fan out and are retrieved and mimic a school of baitfish.

Morehead said other popular techniques during the tournament will include topwater baits and slow-moving crankbaits fished shallow as bass move to the backs of bays and creeks to chase baitfish. Morehead added that initial weather reports have reported favorable conditions for the fishermen during the event.

“It looks like the weather will be pretty darn stable for the tournament with highs in the 60s,” Morehead said. “A little wind or cloud cover will definitely help those guys.”

Takeoffs and weigh-ins will be at Kuttawa/Lyon Co. Boat Ramp located at 1061 Kentucky 295 S. in Kuttawa, Ky. Takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Chevy Wild Card tournament is being hosted by the Lake Barkley Tourism Commission. Registrations are still being taken for the event. Anglers interested in registering may call (270) 252-1000 for more information.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
