LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to the Ohio River at Tanner’s Creek July 16 for the third of five stops in the Hoosier Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.
“The water is going to be superhot,” said Iams/Pringles pro Vic Vatalaro of Kent, Ohio. “The largemouth bass are going to be shallow and seeking shady cover. I would stick to the creeks, stay (in water) less than a foot and look for branches that are overhanging or lying down.
“Another option would be to make the long run to the lock and fish for smallmouth in the tailwaters of the dam,” Vatalaro added. “Either way the fishing is going to be tough, and 10 pounds is going to be a strong stinger. Anglers should downsize their baits. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits and worms are what I would use.”
Takeoffs and weigh-ins will be at the Lawrenceburg City Ramp located on Highway 50 in Lawrenceburg. Takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
