IUKA, Miss. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to the Pickwick Lake June 4 for the third of five stops in the Mississippi Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.
“Lower Pickwick is typically all offshore ledge fishing,” said National Guard pro Jonathan Newton of Rogersville, Ala. “The was spawn was pretty late this year so the fish are just starting to move out and they have been pretty slow moving to deeper water. There are still a few bass that will be shallow, but I would target schooling fish in about 12 to 14 feet of water.
“The key is going to be finding the schooling fish and figuring out what they want to eat,” Newton went on to say. “Crankbaits, jigs, Carolina Rig with a Zoom Brush Hog will be the baits to use. I think it will take about 20 pounds to win this tournament.”
Takeoff and weigh-in will be at JP Coleman State Park located at 613 County Road 321 in Iuka. Takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
The third Mississippi Division BFL tournament was originally scheduled to take place on Lake Ferguson but due to high water levels was moved to Pickwick Lake.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
