CORTLAND, Ohio – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Mosquito Lake May 7 for the first of five stops in the Buckeye Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.

“Mosquito Lake is a great, great lake for a tournament,” said Iams/Pringles pro Vic Vatalaro of Kent, Ohio. “There are a lot of 2- to 3-pound bass in the lake; nobody should have trouble catching a limit. The challenge is going to be finding two big bites (4-pounders) and landing them in the boat. It is probably going to take 15 to17 pounds to win this tournament.

“Mosquito Lake is a great flipping lake,” Vatalaro went on to say. “Anglers are probably going to be flipping in shallow areas they won’t be able to get their boats into which could impact their ability of landing those bigger bass in the boat.

“Anglers should have a couple of different techniques in their arsenal,” Vatalaro added. “There are some options on the lake right now. It used to be that you could only be successful fishing the banks but in the past four or five years the weeds have really started to take over helping the fish population tremendously. Now, not only can you fish the banks but there are plenty of weed beds to choose from as well. Anglers should stay shallow targeting weed beds and rocky points as the bass are getting ready to spawn.”

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Mosquito Lake State Park located at 1439 State Route 305 in Cortland. Takeoff is scheduled for 6:15 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for the regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
