COLUMBIANA, Ala. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Lay Lake April 16 for the third of five stops in the Bama Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.

“There should be lots of postspawn activity going on,” said National Guard pro Jonathan Newton of Rogersville, Ala. “The grass beds should be coming up good, and fish will be shallow.

“Lay Lake is a good place to get a big stringer of (spotted bass),” Newton added. “I think the winning pattern will come on a jig with maybe a little bit of topwater thrown in. And it may be a pretty good spinnerbait bite. It’s going to be just general power-fishing techniques.”

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Beeswax Landing located at 25779 Highway 145 in Columbiana, Ala. Takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Lay Lake BFL tournament is being hosted by the Shelby County Department of Development Services.

Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for the regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
