Walmart BFL Volunteer Division heading to Douglas Lake
KODAK, Tenn. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Douglas Lake April 9 for the second of five stops in the Volunteer Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.
“The fish will be biting, that’s for sure,” said FLW Tour pro Brandon Coulter of Knoxville, Tenn. “That lake is just full of fish. As far as how it fishes this time of year … a lot of it will depend on the water level.
“If the water gets up anywhere near the bushes it will be a really good flipping bite,” Coulter added. “If the water stays low it will be more of an offshore kind of thing. At least it will be off of the bank a little bit.”
Coulter said fish should be close to spawning during the tournament; however, Douglas Lake isn’t traditionally a lake where bed fishing comes into play. Coulter said popular baits will include crankbaits and shaky-head rigs for deeper water when anglers aren’t flipping soft-plastics shallow.
Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Mountain Cove Marina located at 1590 Dike Rd. in Kodak, Tenn. Takeoff is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 3:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for the regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
