PROSPERITY, S.C. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Murray Feb. 19 for the first of five stops in the South Carolina Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards up to $9,000 and $3,000, respectively.

“The cold weather has prevented the fish from going in to pre-spawn,” said Chevy pro Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, S.C., who won the Walmart FLW Tour event held on Lake Murray in 2006. “This is going to be pure winter fishing. Water temperatures are still in the 40s and will probably stay that way for the next week or two. If it rains the water in the backs of creeks may warm up and help increase the bite, but otherwise it’s going to be cold. It will probably only take about 20 pounds to win.

“I would fish deep with a jigging spoon,” Gagliardi added. “I would target structures, deeper brush piles and creek channel drops.”

Takeoffs and weigh-ins will be at Dreher Island State Park located at 3677 State Park Road in Prosperity, S.C. Takeoff is scheduled for 7 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
