BREWERTON, N.Y. – The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to Oneida Lake Aug. 21 for the fourth of five stops in the Northeast Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

“Oneida is a mixture of smallmouth and largemouth with the smallmouth dominating the population,” said Chevy pro Dave Lefebre of Union City, Pa. “There are some nice largemouth in there, and the largemouth could win it.

“This time of year there’s lots of grass on humps and along the shoreline,” Lefebre added. “The smallmouth will be offshore around rocks and grass. There’s a ton of docks around the lake and lots of boat canals that largemouth hang around. And up supershallow there’s willow trees that will hold fish.”

Lefebre said popular baits for smallmouths include tubes, flukes and topwater baits, while jigs and frogs will produce strikes from largemouths.

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Oneida Shores County Park located at 9400 Bartell Road in Brewerton, N.Y. Takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Oneida Lake BFL tournament is being hosted by the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers that offers even bigger prizes to qualifiers of the regional championship and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
