MARBURY, Md. – The Bass Fishing League is headed to the Potomac River May 1 for the first of five stops in the Northeast Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

“This tournament will be won catching spawning fish,” said FLW Tour pro Jacob Powroznik of Prince George, Va., who has one win and four FLW top-10 finishes at the Potomac. “The fish are going to be spawning in the shallow grassy areas. I would stay in 2 to 5 feet of water and throw Berkley Sinking Minnows or a 5-inch Power Hawg. It is going to take 22 to 24 pounds to win this thing.”

According to Powroznik, the key to this tournament is going to be the spawn; 95 percent of the fish spawn in the grassy areas and never leave. He advises that anglers take their time and fish slowly because the fish are there.

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Smallwood State Park located at 2750 Sweden Point Road in Marbury, Md. Takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m., while weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering even bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
