Martin moves to top of the Rock

Rick Martin of Cherry Valley, Ill., takes command of the Rock after day three with five-bass for 15 pounds, 3 ounces.

BRANSON, Mo. - The weather changed again on day three of Stren Series Championship at Table Rock Lake, and so did the leaderboard. Blustery winds and a low ceiling of clouds kept water temperatures down Friday. With weights starting at zero this morning, the leaderboard shuffled around a bit. Previous tournament leader David Curtis slipped to fifth place while two anglers in the bottom half of the top 10 catapulted to the top of the `Rock." Now leading the tournament is Rick Martin of Cherry Valley, Ill., a Central Division qualifier who is fishing his first Stren Series Championship. Martin qualified 10th after day two, but moved to the front today with a five-bass limit weighing 15 pounds, 3 ounces. A self-proclaimed river rat, Martin is making a long run up the James River, where he is concentrating on one section of river that has all the right ingredients. "This place I'm fishing has bluff walls, chunk rock, bushes and lay-downs all in one area," Martin said. "It's got the perfect mix of shallow-water structure. It takes about an hour and a half to fish the best stretch, then I run back to the beginning of it and start over again." Martin's key lure is a 3/8-ounce homemade spinnerbait with tandem willow blades. "I've got just two spinnerbait rods on the deck, and that's it," Martin added. "It's basic river fishing, which is what I love to do." Bosley second Brennan Bosley of Benton, Ark., is now in second place with a five-bass limit weighing Duracell pro Brennan Bosley caught 14 pounds, 5 ounces Friday and is in second place with one day of competition remaining.14 pounds, 5 ounces. Bosley is doing what he likes best: cranking. "I'm throwing a Storm Wiggle Wart and a little Lucky Craft crankbait," the Duracell pro said. "It's really more of a springtime pattern, but for whatever reason, it's working now. I'm targeting ledge banks, bluff ends and channel swings in the major creeks. "I feel like I've covered a million miles of water today," he said. "I'm fishing about 25 places per day and running my gas tanks dry." As for tomorrow, Bosley is excited about his chances of winning. "I've been getting a big bite every day, and I did not get one today," he added. "Hopefully I'm due for a big bite or two tomorrow." Scott third Using his homemade spinnerbait, pro Ricky Scott caught a 12-pound, 15-ounce limit Friday.Ricky D. Scott of Van Buren, Ark., moved up to the third-place position on day three with five bass weighing 12 pounds, 15 ounces. Scott won the Stren Series Championship on Wheeler Lake in 2006 and wants another one. He is fishing the same homemade spinnerbait he used to win at Wheeler. The spinnerbait features two white willow-leaf blades and a white skirt. Scott says it looks like a 3/8-ounce spinnerbait, but he has added a little extra lead to the body for casting distance. "I'm targeting wood and windswept banks with it," Scott said. "I've been catching mostly largemouths, but today the spotted bass started crushing it - I guess this weather got those spotted bass going." Dodson fourth Local pro Robbie Dodson of Harrison, Ark., is in fourth place with a five-bass limit weighing Robbie Dodson caught 12 pounds, 15 ounces on day three and is fourth in the Pro Division.12 pounds, 15 ounces. Dodson, who knows Table Rock well, has been relying on a Wiggle Wart, custom painted by Tim Hughes, and a spinnerbait to target wind-blown banks and shade. "I'm focusing on pea-gravel banks, rock and wood," Dodson said. "I'm fishing from the bank down to about 10 feet." Dodson added that he felt like the leaders may have slipped away from him today. "I really needed to cull two of my fish today to have a chance at winning," he noted. "I believe I might be a little too far behind now." Curtis fifth David Curtis of Trinity, Texas, is now in fifth place with a two-day total of 12 pounds, 14 ounces.David Curtis of Trinity, Texas, is now in fifth place with a two-day total of 12 pounds, 14 ounces. Curtis has been starting each day on a special brush pile in 20 feet of water. "It's now officially called the two-fish hole," Curtis said. "Every morning I've started there I've caught two good fish immediately, and then it's over. I'll stay around and fish it for another hour or so and never get another bite." Curtis has several other deep-water breaks in 12 to 20 feet of water that are also producing fish, but none as good as the two-fish hole. Once Curtis gets a limit off his deep fish, he moves to the bank with a Lucky Craft RC 2.5 and begins covering shallow wind-blown banks. The shallower pattern has produced some culls for him this week, including one today. Rest of the best Rounding out the top 10 pros in the Stren Series Championship on Table Rock after day three: 6th: Ott Defoe of Knoxville, Tenn., five bass, 12-9 7th: Greg Bohannan of Rogers, Ark., five bass, 10-0 8th: Michael Iaconelli of Runnemede, N.J., four bass, 8-5 9th: Bobby McMullin of Pevely, Mo., four bass, 7-12 10th: Lendell Martin of Nacogdoches, La., one bass, 1-11 Day four of the Stren Series Championship on Table Rock Lake will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday at State Park Marina, located at Highway 165 S. in Branson.

Birge Buzzes Ahead

Today started off with a slightly miserable 31-degree air temperature, but it didn’t take long for the top 20 pros to really heat up on Lewis Smith Lake at the second stop of the 2015 Walmart FLW Tour presented by Evinrude. Reports poured in throughout the day of big bass – especially big largemouths – being caught off beds. It looked at first as if one of the “largemouth lookers” might piece together a big enough bag to snatch the lead away from Oklahoma rookie Zack Birge, who struggled early to make his shallow topwater pattern work. Unfortunately for the rest of the field, the young gun Birge has the coolness and patience of a veteran, and he stuck with his game plan of throwing a buzzbait and soft jerkbait rig until the sun had time to warm the shallows and spur the fish to become more active. Birge tallied 17 pounds, 11 ounces today, raising his three-day total to 54-8 and giving him a lead of 3-11 over Texas veteran Clark Wendlandt in second place. READ MORE »

The sight-fishers have reported finding new bedders, the schoolers are still schooling and a couple of guys have even started tapping floating docks. READ MORE »

Topwater Takes Birge to the Top

On a day when chilly, windy post-front conditions challenged many Walmart FLW Tour anglers who were relying on sight-fishing for spawning bass, Zack Birge bucked the trend and pulled out a pair of topwaters to haul in 17 pounds, 14 ounces. Birge jumped from third place past day-one leader Drew Benton to take over the top spot on Lewis Smith Lake in the event, which is presented by Evinrude. Birge’s two-day total of 36-13 has him positioned 1 pound ahead of Benton. READ MORE »

Top 5 Patterns from Lewis Smith Day 2

While air and water temperatures plummeted on day two of the Walmart FLW Tour event on Lewis Smith Lake presented by Evinrude, the big surprise came in the stability of the fishing patterns amidst such change. Zack Birge found plenty of production on his primary pattern to send him to the top of the leaderboard, and those under him held true to their patterns as well to secure a ticket to day three’s top 20. Among the biggest surprises was the number of pros who were still able to pluck fish off beds. Most pros that were sight-fishing say the bass are committed to beds and that the cold snap will not run them off at this point in time. Despite the cold, some even found new fish on beds that were not there yesterday. READ MORE »
