ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – Tournament redfishing is a new sport, and wins are now ripe for the picking.
Just as the bass-tournament pioneers Roland Martin and Bill Dance heaped wins and angler-of-the-year titles onto their resumes during tournament bass fishing’s early years, now is the time to stack up wins in professional redfishing.
If redfish anglers think the tournament landscape is competitive now, just wait five more years when redfish pros as a whole will be better and the quarry much more educated.
Andrew Bostick of Marco Island, Fla., and Mark Sepe of Deland, Fla., know this all too well, and as they prepared for the final day of the FLW Redfish Series Eastern event Saturday morning with a scant 7-ounce lead, they could practically smell their first win together as a team.
Bostick and Sepe both bring impressive professional redfishing resumes to the table.
Sepe is a past Redfish Cup winner and Bostick has Redfish Cup and IFA Angler of the Year titles to his credit. But Bostick has never won a national redfish event. He’s led several big events going into the last day, including this same FLW Series stop last year, but has always come up short.
“Needless to say, I’m ready to close the deal,” Bostick said this morning, the conviction in his voice cutting the salty air. “I’ve already let too many get away, and I don’t want this to be another one.”
Also looking to add Redfish Series wins to their resumes is the team of Blair Wiggins of Cocoa, Fla., and Tadd Vandemark of Key Largo, Fla., currently in fourth. Wiggins, who hosts the “Addictive Fishing” television show, would certainly like to punctuate his flats-fishing expertise with a Redfish Series trophy as well.
The final day has begun. The final weigh-in will be held at 4 p.m. at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Englewood, Fla.
