Magnificent Mead

The scenery is impressive, but will EverStart Western anglers catch them on windy Lake Mead?

HENDERSON, Nev. – The scenery at Lake Mead National Park was nothing short of brilliant on day one of the second EverStart Series Western Division event of the season. A blazing sunshine bounced off the crystal-clear waters of Lake Mead, shadowed only by the imposing desert mountains that flank Callville Bay Marina outside of Las Vegas.

The fishing, however, could wind up being less than remarkable today depending on the force of the wind. According to Ramona, Calif., pro Gabe Bolivar, today’s expected winds of 10 to 15 mph could be enough to rough it up out there on big Lake Mead.

Bolivar reported that Lake Mead bass can be found in all three stages, opening up the possibility of a decent sight-fishing bite.

“They’re in all sorts of stages,” Bolivar said. “The fishing’s pretty good – it’s fair. As long as the wind isn’t too bad there should be some good sight-fishing.”

However, Bolivar warns that the anglers who catch their fish by sight today might be better off abandoning that tactic tomorrow, when the winds are supposed to be even worse. He believes that going after prespawn fish is a more reliable method.

“If you have a 2-pound average you have a good shot at doing good,” Bolivar said. “Two pounds is a good number no matter the time of year.”

Competitors will weigh in their catches today beginning at 3 p.m. at Callville Bay, located at 100 Callville Bay Road in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
