The going gets tough at Cumberland

SOMERSET, Ky. - Lake Cumberland bass got a severe case of the post-frontal lockjaw Friday at the EverStart Series Championship in Kentucky. Clear blue skies and plummeting water temperatures set up the toughest conditions these anglers have faced since competition began. Out of the top 10 pros and 10 co-anglers, not one single five-bass limit was brought to the weigh-in. Increasingly in FLW Outdoors tournaments, it seems that when the going gets tough, the western anglers get going. That trend continued today as Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif., brought in four bass weighing 5 pounds, 13 ounces to take the day-three lead in the championship. But what may surprise some is that he did not catch his fish on a drop-shot rig. "I caught them on a jig, spinnerbait and top-water," Ehrler revealed. Ehrler has been running and gunning the lake and fishing tiny points and cuts in the bank. "I'll pull up to a spot and maybe make two casts and go," he said. "If a fish is there, it usually bites on the first cast." But Ehrler said did not fish as fast today. "Because of the high pressure, I tried to slow down and work a couple of the places more thoroughly," he said. Another key to Ehrler's fishing is not getting too caught up in places and lures he has already fished. "When I go back to the places where I've caught them, I don't catch much, but as soon as I start running completely new water, I'll catch a few," he added. "Like today, I picked up a spinnerbait for the first time in the tournament and caught one on it. And that's really what I'm going to do tomorrow - just fish the way I see the day developing." Pro Warren Wyman of Calera, Ala., caught three bass weighing 5 pounds, 2 ounces and placed second.Wyman in second Warren Wyman of Calera, Ala., has an Alabama address, but he is originally from the West, too. He weighed in three bass today for 5 pounds, 2 ounces to take second place. "It took me a while to figure it out, but I think the fish moved closer to the shoreline with the colder weather," Wyman opined. "I've been fishing out over open water this week, but I couldn't get bit out there today, so I moved to the bank and caught a couple, including a big largemouth, off shallower wood with a jig." Pro Greg Pugh of Cullman, Ala., caught two bass weighing 4 pounds, 9 ounces for third place.Pugh's last-minute cast Pedigree pro Greg Pugh of Cullman, Ala., is in third with 4 pounds, 9 ounces. Pugh only caught two bass today, but one was a keeper smallmouth that he caught with just minutes remaining. "I pulled up near weigh-in at the end of the day to make few last casts," Pugh said. "I heard a big splash and saw a shad fleeing for its life. I fired a spinnerbait over there and caught that big smallmouth." Sumpter stays in the hunt In fourth place, with four bass weighing 4 pounds, 5 ounces, is local favorite H.C. Sumpter of Nancy, Ky. Sumpter went after quality smallmouths this morning for about four hours. When his efforts proved fruitless, he dropped back and punted by catching spotted bass on a jig. "I'm going to try for those smallmouth again tomorrow," he said. "All it takes is a couple of those to get back out front." Colson in fifth Ramie Colson of Cadiz, Ky., is in fifth place with four bass weighing 3 pounds, 3 ounces. Brent Ehrler, with co-angler Richard Vizcarra on the net, tries to land a nice bass Friday.Rest of the best Rounding out the top pros are Pete Gluszek of Franklinville, N.J., in sixth place with 2 pounds, 6 ounces; Mark Fletcher of Palmetto, Ga., in seventh place with 2 pounds, 1 ounce; Lloyd Pickett of Bartlett, Tenn., in eighth place with 1 pound, 13 ounces; Dion Hibdon of Stover, Mo., in ninth place with 14 ounces; and Scott Emery of Livonia, Mich., in 10th place with 12 ounces. The final day of competition begins tomorrow at 7 a.m. at General Burnside Park.

Birge Buzzes Ahead

Today started off with a slightly miserable 31-degree air temperature, but it didn’t take long for the top 20 pros to really heat up on Lewis Smith Lake at the second stop of the 2015 Walmart FLW Tour presented by Evinrude. Reports poured in throughout the day of big bass – especially big largemouths – being caught off beds. It looked at first as if one of the “largemouth lookers” might piece together a big enough bag to snatch the lead away from Oklahoma rookie Zack Birge, who struggled early to make his shallow topwater pattern work. Unfortunately for the rest of the field, the young gun Birge has the coolness and patience of a veteran, and he stuck with his game plan of throwing a buzzbait and soft jerkbait rig until the sun had time to warm the shallows and spur the fish to become more active. Birge tallied 17 pounds, 11 ounces today, raising his three-day total to 54-8 and giving him a lead of 3-11 over Texas veteran Clark Wendlandt in second place. READ MORE »

The sight-fishers have reported finding new bedders, the schoolers are still schooling and a couple of guys have even started tapping floating docks. READ MORE »

Topwater Takes Birge to the Top

On a day when chilly, windy post-front conditions challenged many Walmart FLW Tour anglers who were relying on sight-fishing for spawning bass, Zack Birge bucked the trend and pulled out a pair of topwaters to haul in 17 pounds, 14 ounces. Birge jumped from third place past day-one leader Drew Benton to take over the top spot on Lewis Smith Lake in the event, which is presented by Evinrude. Birge’s two-day total of 36-13 has him positioned 1 pound ahead of Benton. READ MORE »

Top 5 Patterns from Lewis Smith Day 2

While air and water temperatures plummeted on day two of the Walmart FLW Tour event on Lewis Smith Lake presented by Evinrude, the big surprise came in the stability of the fishing patterns amidst such change. Zack Birge found plenty of production on his primary pattern to send him to the top of the leaderboard, and those under him held true to their patterns as well to secure a ticket to day three’s top 20. Among the biggest surprises was the number of pros who were still able to pluck fish off beds. Most pros that were sight-fishing say the bass are committed to beds and that the cold snap will not run them off at this point in time. Despite the cold, some even found new fish on beds that were not there yesterday. READ MORE »
