According to pro Basil Bacon of Springfield, Mo., bass on Old Hickory Lake will likely be found in grassy areas in the backs of coves, in creeks by the dam, along logs and stumps in the main lake, and in the Cumberland River.

Bacon said that when fishing the grass in coves, buzzbaits, spinner baits and top-waters will all produce if fished in chartreuse. Bacon believes Old Hickory “is a chartreuse lake” and knowing that will be key to having success. He should know: He won the 2002 Wal-Mart FLW Tour stop on Old Hickory.

Kellogg’s pro Clark Wendlandt of Cedar Park, Texas, stresses not to forget about the many docks on the lake’s southern end. He believes the tournament could even be won by concentrating on the docks flipping a shad-colored jig in 3 to 8 feet of water.

The creeks by the dam produce well this time of year due to their slightly better water clarity. Bacon stressed that the bass population around the dam will not be as great as in other areas of the 22,500 surface-acre lake, but the size of fish caught will be better.

Logs and stumps in the main lake produce nice catches during this time of year, too.
