Team Lawry’s rocketed to the top of the Wal-Mart FLW Tour sponsor teams in dramatic fashion after the final regular-season tournament held last week at Alabama’s Wheeler Lake. Lawry’s had occupied a comfortable spot in the middle third of the overall standings among the tour’s 12 sponsor teams throughout the season. Then, in the eleventh hour, Lawry’s added a little flavor to a competition that had been dominated for most of the season by Team Snickers.

Snickers held onto the No. 1 spot in the overall standings for the first four tournaments of the 2003 FLW Tour season. Team Stanley was able to break through to reach the top spot after May’s competition on Kentucky Lake. But Snickers and Stanley left the door to the sponsor-team title open at Wheeler Lake, and Lawry’s – anchored by a strong finish from pro Jim Moynagh – came charging through. However, Stanley’s showing at Wheeler Lake was enough to retain second place in the overall standings while Snickers tumbled from second to fifth.

Lawry’s outfished its nearest competitor at Wheeler Lake, Team Fujifilm, by almost 40 points to take top honors at the tournament. Stanley trailed Fuji by about 15 points to take third-place honors at Wheeler Lake while Kellogg’s finished close behind in fourth.

Sponsor-team standings are based on the average number of points earned by the anglers fishing for any given team as assigned in the FLW Tour’s Angler of the Year competition. Points in the 2003 sponsor-team race were earned during the FLW Tour’s six qualifying events and monitored throughout the season.

Final overall standings include results from each of the six FLW Tour regular-season events that took place this season:

1. Lawry’s – 788 points
2. Stanley – 762.75
3. Fujifilm – 757.67
4. Kellogg’s – 734.4
5. Snickers – 724
6. Castrol – 683
7. Hellmann’s – 660
8. 7 Up – 612.33
9. Land O’Lakes – 593.25
10. Banana Boat – 592
11. Skippy – 577
12. Lipton Sides – 239

Each of the dozen sponsor teams competed in the Wheeler Lake tournament, and results from that event have been tallied:

1. Lawry’s
2. Fujifilm
3. Stanley
4. Kellogg’s
5. Skippy
6. 7 Up
7. Land O’Lakes
8. Snickers
9. Castrol
10. Hellmann’s

12. Lipton Sides

Other standout performances from the last tournament among anglers on sponsored teams include Team Land O’Lakes pro Keith Williams of Conway, Ark, who reeled in a third-place finish; Team Stanley pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., who earned a fifth-place finish; Team Kellogg’s pro Alvin Shaw of State Road, N.C., who netted a 16th-place finish; and Team Fuji pro Randy Blaukat of Lamar, Mo., who garnered an 18th-place finish.
