Top 20 pros and co-anglers go fishing again on Guntersville Lake in Eastern EverStart event

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. – By a quick survey of the top 20 pros’ rods this morning, it’s hard to tell exactly what the best bait is on Guntersville right now. Zara Spooks, buzzbaits, frogs, rats, jigs, worms, medium crankbaits, deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs – everything seems to be working.

“You must have a little of everything to catch fish here,” said Chad Grigsby of Colon, Mich., as he boarded fellow pro Andy Morgan’s boat. “And if you don’t have something, you can just steal it from my good buddy Andy here.”

“What are you doing in my boat?” inquired Morgan as he watched Grigsby help himself to his tackle locker.

“Oh, just borrowing a few jig trailers from you,” replied Grigsby.

Anglers are catching bass on just about everything in the tackle box this week on Guntersville. Pros have reported catching fish in every stage of the postspawn from guarding fry up on the bank to cranking deep ledges and everywhere in between.

Bait selection is so diverse because fishing on Guntersville is more about being around the fish than throwing the right bait.

“Once you get around them, several different lures will work,” said Grigsby. “But if you are not around fish, nothing will work, not even these goofy trailers I just thieved from Andy.”

Anglers will face the threat of thunderstorms again today. That’s a bad thing for Phillip Nunnelley of Cullman, Ala., who is leading the event. “Come on sunshine,” Nunnelley gleamed this morning. “I need sunshine.”

The next two days should tell the tale about predominant patterns as these anglers try to survive another cut day.

The weigh-in will take place at the Guntersville Wal-Mart at 4 p.m. to determine the top 10 pros and co-anglers who will go on to fish in the finals Saturday.
