Opening-round cuts today

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. – Clouds and gloomy weather once again greeted EverStart Series anglers as they set out onto Kentucky and Barkley lakes Thursday for the second half of opening-round action in the third Central Division tournament of the season. The shifty weather could spell continued success for many anglers as they target active shallow-water bass.

The pro field is headed by a heavy local contingent after day one. Four of the top six pros are Kentucky natives, led by Paducah’s Dan Morehead with a 19-pound, 6-ounce stringer Wednesday. Morehead said yesterday’s weather, which was similarly overcast, was a “perfect day” for fishing.

On the other hand, he added that he wouldn’t mind if it changed a little bit coming into Thursday’s competition. “Quite honestly, I’m hoping the sun comes out tomorrow,” he said Wednesday. “Then the flipping bite will get a lot better.”

The forecast doesn’t look good as far as the sun is concerned. Continued showers and thunderstorms have been predicted by the weather service, but that only seems to turn the fish on here in Western Kentucky.

The pros weighed in a solid number of five-bass stringers on day one, and that trend should continue on day two. Pro cut estimates hover around 23 to 24 pounds for a two-day weight while co-anglers are looking to accumulate roughly 8 to 10 pounds to make the cut.

Day-two weigh-in begins at 3 p.m. at Moors Resort in Gilbertsville. Following today’s competition both the pro and co-angler fields will be cut to the top 20 anglers apiece for Friday’s semifinal round. The four-day $210,000 tournament ends Saturday, when the pro winner will receive $15,000 and a Ranger boat and the co-angler winner will receive $6,000.
