Anglers fishing to make the cut today
HENDERSON, N.C. – It’s day two at the final tournament of the year in the Eastern Division, and that means it’s now or never for those EverStart anglers who are vying to make the cut and make their mark in competitive bass fishing in 2001.
Pro Mark Rogers of Naples, Fla., snatched the tournament lead yesterday to increase the pressure on Koby Kreiger of Osceola, Ind., in the 2001 points race. Kreiger leads the Eastern Division standings with 576 points while Rogers sits right behind him with 571. While Rogers leads the tournament, Kreiger is also poised to make the top-30 cut today in 21st place after yesterday.
Kerr Lake has been relatively generous to competitors this week, yielding 83 five-fish limits yesterday in the Pro Division and 12 in the Co-Angler Division. Late-spawning bass have kept many anglers in the shallows close to fish and in contention to make the cut.
After today’s competition, both the pro and co-angler fields will be trimmed to 30 anglers apiece for tomorrow’s semifinal round. Pro competitors estimated around 23 pounds as the two-day weight to beat to make today’s cut. Co-anglers will be shooting for an opening-round weight in the 12- to 13-pound range to make the cut.
Weigh-in begins today at 2:30 p.m. at Satterwhite Point located at 6254 Satterwhite Point Road outside of Henderson. The four-day, $185,000 tournament lasts through Saturday, when the winning pro will receive $15,000 and a Ranger boat. The winning co-angler will receive $6,000.
