Carnell wins $3,957 at Okie Division tournament

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Jim Carnell, 40, of Muskogee, Okla., out-fished 110 competitors Saturday to earn $3,957 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Okie Division event on Webber Falls reservoir.

Carnell caught five bass weighing 18 pounds, 6 ounces during the one-day event to top Sam Newby of Pocola, Okla., who finished with a five-bass catch of 13-10 worth $1,978. Carnell caught his limit by casting a smoke red tube jig to laydowns in 4- to 5-feet of water.

Sherman Nofire of Welling, Okla., took third place and collected $989 with five bass weighing 12-8. Jason Christie of Park Hill, Okla., placed fourth and earned $857 with five bass weighing 11-8, while Scott Tedder of Porter, Okla., placed fifth and earned $725 with four bass weighing 10-11.

Kendall Anderson of Sperry, Okla., won the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award in the Boater Division and collected $550 with a 5-pound, 5-ounce bass that he caught on a jig in 2 feet of water.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,978 went to Brian Kroth, 20, of Shawnee, Okla., who topped 110 competitors with five bass weighing 12-9. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $989 went to Randy Kelly of Inola, Okla., with five bass weighing 11-3, while Claude Mize of Spiro, Okla., took third place and $495 with three bass weighing 7-2.

Harold Bohannon, 30, of Rogers, Ark., won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $275 with a 4-pound, 14-ounce bass that he caught on a spinnerbait in 2 feet of water.

Derek Fulps of Broken Arrow, Okla., won the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures. He caught five bass weighing 9-10.

The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 30-Oct. 1 on Grand Lake, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.
