Wethington wins Red Man Mountain Division event on Lake Cumberland

MONTICELLO, Ky.,- Gerald Wethington of Columbia, Ky., earned $4,580 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points Saturday for winning the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Mountain Division event on Lake Cumberland.

Wethington caught four bass weighing 13 pounds, 6 ounces during the one-day event to edge out Kendall Robinson of Lancaster, Ky., who finished with a four-bass catch of 12-7 worth $2,290. Wethington caught his bass on a 3/8-ounce green flipping jig with a green pork chunk trailer.

Ken Davis of Cincinnati, Ohio, took third place and collected $1,145 with four bass weighing 10-0. Rex Huff of Corbin, Ky., placed fourth and earned $993 with five bass weighing 9-12, while John Daniel of Bowling Green, Ky., placed fifth and earned $916 with four bass weighing 9-1.

Daniel also won the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures.

David Lawson of Richmond, Ky., won the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award in the Boater Division and collected $670 for a 4-pound, 13-ounce bass.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $2,290 went to Shane Brock of Corbin, Ky., for two bass weighing 7-11. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,145 went to Michael Hampton of Corbin, Ky., for two bass weighing 3-1, while Ray Allen of London, Ky., took third place and $572 with one bass weighing 2-15.

Brock won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $335 for a 5-pound, 8-ounce bass.

On June 3, the Red Man Tournament Trail will visit Lake Cumberland for the third of five events in the Mountain Division. The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 23-24 on the Barren River, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.

Knapp winner of Red Man Illini division event

WHITTINGTON, Ill., (April 17, 2000) – Jim Knapp of Eureka, Mo., out-fished 141 competitors Saturday to earn $4,710 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Illini Division event on Rend Lake.

Knapp caught five largemouth bass weighing 17 pounds, 14 ounces during the one-day event to edge out Charles Clark of Decatur, Ill., who finished with a five-bass catch of 16-9 worth $2,355. Knapp caught his limit on black and green Berkley Power Claws while fishing bushes and laydowns near Muddy Creek.

Louis Koehl of Frankfort, Ill., took third place and collected $1,177 for five bass weighing 15-8. Joe Verbeck of O’Fallon, Ill., placed fourth and earned $1,021 for five bass weighing 15-6, while Greg Mullins of Mount Vernon, Ill., placed fifth and earned $942 for five bass weighing 13-15.

Dan McDowell, 32, of Mattoon, Ill., won the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award in the Boater Division and collected $705 for a 6-pound, 11-ounce largemouth that he caught flipping a baby-blue jig in the south end of the lake.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $2,086 went to Travis Brouillette of Murphysboro, Ill., who topped 116 competitors with two bass weighing 8-11. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,543 went to Tom Davis of Waterloo, Ill., for two bass weighing 7-15, while Nancy Bailey of Benton, Ill., took third place and $522 with two bass weighing 7-2.

Brouillette won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $290 for a 6-pound, 2-ounce largemouth he caught on a crankbait outside Gun Creek.

Knapp won the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures.

On May 20, the Red Man Tournament Trail will visit the Ohio River Smithland Pool for the second of five events in the Illini Division. The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 23-24 on the Mississippi River near Fort Madison, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.

Ford wins Mississippi division Red Man on Ross Barnett

BRANDON, Miss.,- Newton Ford of Brandon, Miss., out-fished 122 competitors Saturday to earn $4,274 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Mississippi Division event on Ross Barnett Reservoir.

Ford caught five largemouth bass weighing 16 pounds, 14 ounces during the one-day event to edge out Shannon Denson of Brandon, Miss., who finished with a five-bass catch of 15-8 worth $2,137. Ford caught his limit, including a 6-pound, 5-ounce largemouth that earned him the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award and $610, casting a jig and spinnerbait in the riverbed.

Steve Jones of Pascagoula, Miss., took third place and collected $1,068 with four bass weighing 15-5. David Watkins of Brandon, Miss., placed fourth and earned $926 for five bass weighing 14-10, while Joel Barber of Brandon, Miss., placed fifth and earned $855 for five bass weighing 14-9.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $2,014 went to Chris Gable of Biloxi, Miss., who topped 122 competitors with four bass weighing 10-4. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,007 went to Michael Tharp of Arcola, Miss., for four bass weighing 9-13, while Michael Pfeiffer of Columbus, Miss., took third place and $504 with three bass weighing 9-11.

James Galbreath of Cordova, Tenn., won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $280 for a 4-pound, 11-ounce largemouth he caught up-river on a red Zoom lizard.

Pfeiffer won the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures.

On June 10, the Red Man Tournament Trail will visit the Columbus Pool for the fourth of five events in the Mississippi Division. The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 30-Oct. 1 on Lake Ferguson, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.

Smith wins Red Man bass event on Lake Neely Henry

GADSDEN, Ala.,- Ricky Smith of Anniston, Ala., out-fished 123 competitors Saturday to earn $4,309 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Choo Choo Division event on Lake Neely Henry.

Smith caught five bass weighing 17 pounds, 2 ounces during the one-day event to edge out Rilo Carver of Maryville, Tenn., who also finished with a five-bass catch of 17-2 but fell to Smith during a rare 1-hour tiebreaker. Carver received $2,154 for his second place finish and $615 for a 5-pound, 3-ounce bass that earned him the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award.

Terry Tucker of Gadsden, Ala., took third place and collected $1,077 for five bass weighing 16-7. Kevin Keith of Dalton, Ga., placed fourth and earned $934 for five bass weighing 14-11, while Matthew Herren of Trussville, Ala., placed fifth and earned $862 for five bass weighing 14-10.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $2,137 went to Barry Guthrie, 50, of Knoxville, Tenn., who topped 122 competitors with four bass weighing 11-15. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,068 went to Drew Watkins of Dalton, Ga., for five bass weighing 11-2, while Jeff Burchett of London, Ky., took third place and $534 with five bass weighing 10-13.

Burchett also won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $305.

On June 3, the Red Man Tournament Trail will visit Weiss Lake for the third of five events in the Choo Choo Division. The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 16-17 on Guntersville Lake, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.

Taylor wins Red Man Piedmont division event on Lake Gaston

LITTLETON, N.C.,- Bob Taylor of Pamplin, Va., out fished 200 competitors Saturday to earn $6,000 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Piedmont Division event on Lake Gaston.

Taylor caught five bass weighing 21 pounds, 4 ounces during the one-day event using a Berkley Power Craw in 1 to 3 feet of water. His catch also earned him the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures.

Howard Bean of Salisbury, N.C., finished second in the Boater Division with a four-bass catch weighing 17-10. Bean earned $3,000 for his effort.

Ronald Wolfarth of Locust, N.C., took third place and collected $1,500 for five bass weighing 16-10. John Crews of Jetersville, Va., placed fourth and earned $1,300 for five bass weighing 16-8, while Chris Jennings of Altavista, Va., placed fifth and earned $1,200 for five bass weighing 15-10.

Keith Joyce of Apex, N.C., won the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award in the Boater Division and collected $1,000 for a 7-pound, 8-ounce bass that he caught jigging a Berkley Power Craw.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $3,000 went to Scott Holtswarth of Raleigh, N.C., who topped 200 competitors with five bass weighing 12-13. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,500 went to Michael Slemp of Lanexa, Va., for four bass weighing 10-13, while Paul Higgins of Chesapeake, Va., took third place and $750 with five bass weighing 10-12.

Robert Taylor of Ayden, N.C., won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $500 for a 6-pound, 13-ounce bass he caught on a black and blue jig.

On May 6, the Red Man Tournament Trail will visit the Potomac River for the second of five events in the Piedmont Division. The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 30-Oct. 1 on Kerr Lake, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.
